The Ohio State softball team took both ends of its doubleheader Sunday, defeating the Oakland Grizzlies 13-0 in game two and 11-3 in game one.
OSU (38-7) has won three games in a row and has not lost an out-of-conference game since March 25 against North Carolina State.
Junior pitcher Megan Miller (5-0) started game two and pitched five innings of two-hit ball. Miller walked one, struck out one and pitched efficiently, shutting out the Grizzlies.
Junior first baseman Sam Marder smashed a two-run home run to center field part of a seven-run third inning. Marder has a Big Ten-leading 16 home runs for the season.
Junior second baseman Whitney Cooper followed up a solid game one performance by going 3-3 at the plate and driving in two runs.
Senior captain Kim Reeder won her 20th game of the season and improved to 20-4. Reeder pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits. She struck out nine batters as the Buckeyes cruised to an 11-3 victory in game one.
Coach Linda Kalafatis was disappointed by the defense backing Reeder, but was impressed with her start.
“I thought Kim did a great job of keeping her composure and rallying the troops,” she said.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on junior right fielder Anne Cicchini’s single to third base. But the Buckeyes stormed back and scored eight unanswered runs.
The Grizzlies scored a run on a suicide squeeze by Cicchini in the sixth inning and added one more run in the inning.
OSU answered right back and scored three runs in the sixth inning. The Buckeyes mercy ruled the Grizzlies on junior second baseman Whitney Cooper’s game-winning single to left.
The final score was 11-3 through six innings.
In OSU’s game one victory, freshman shortstop Alicia Herron drove in five runs on two home runs. Herron hit a towering shot to left field that scored three runs in the fourth inning. She came to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning, hit a line drive just over the center field fence and scored Whitney Cooper.
Before Herron’s second home run she noticed that the corner infielders were playing deep. She approached Kalafatis and asked if she could drop a bunt down the line. Kalafatis told her no but said she could drop one over the wall.
“When she is on a good streak, she stays hot,” Kalafatis said.
Sophomore catcher Rachel Shepherd hit her fourth home run of the season to lead off the fifth inning.
Cooper had a fantastic performance at the plate for the Buckeyes. She was 5-for-7 with five RBIs on Sunday and helped lead the Buckeyes to the sweep.
“Cooper has been consistent all year it’s great to see her get those numbers,” Kalafatis said.
The Buckeyes continue their home stand at 5 p.m. Wednesday, taking on Western Michigan from Buckeye Field.
