There’s a lot that goes into the perfect summer wardrobe.

But with a few essentials, you’ll be able wear nearly everything in your closet, whether it’s a bright sunny day or a wacky weather hail storm in July.

The key to a successful warm-weather wardrobe is quality items that will get you from the beach to the office without breaking a sweat.

The maxi dress, which can be worn anywhere, is one of these items. It can be dressed up or down, and there is a silhouette to match every body type. My personal favorite is the cut that flares at the bottom and swishes when you walk. It’s feminine without being frilly. For a super slender look, try a straight cut that is the same width from your hips to toes. This will give the illusion that you are seven feet tall and have the body of a ballerina. Pair a maxi dress with a denim jacket for a casual feel or a blingy blazer for a night out.

This brings me to the next summertime staple: a denim jacket. A quintessential Americana piece, this jacket can become your best friend. Worn with a lacy tank and maxi skirt, the denim will dress your outfit down to something that’s approachable for even a Saturday morning Starbucks run. You can also pair it with jeans or denim shorts for a trendier look that can be pumped up with accessories.

When it comes to accessories, a cross-body bag serves as a perfect carryall for the girl on the go. Your hands are free to text, grab a drink or hail a cab. While these bags tend not to hold as much as your typical tote, it will force you to rethink what you actually need with you on a night out or for weekend shopping. Your shoulders and back will thank you.

Every girl and guy should own a pair of dependable leather flip-flops, as these will be your go-to shoes for most of the season. Find a pair that fit your feet comfortably and won’t give you blisters once they are broken in, which might take a few days. Leather flip-flops can be paired with a pair of shorts, a dress, a skirt or even a beach cover up. If you want to go for a more “worn-in” look for your shoes, trudge through the sand with them a few times.

For the summer, a pair of chino shorts with at least a three-inch inseam is also a must-have. These shorts can be worn to the workplace or the grocery store and can flatter all body types.

The other thing to keep in mind is these shorts are generally an acceptable length for most social situations. Remember, cheeks shouldn’t be seen anywhere except your face.

These bones of your closet should be treated accordingly, depending on your own personality and lifestyle. Summer is all about having fun, so your wardrobe should be too.
