The Ohio Union was evacuated Tuesday evening after an unattended backpack was found outside the building.

The backpack was purposefully detonated according to an Ohio State University Police officer on scene. Detonating suspicious packages is protocol, and does not necessarily mean it contained an explosive device.

The unattended package contained no explosives, according to a notice from OSU Media Relations The Lantern received at about 8:20 p.m. Tuesday.

According to University Police, parts of High Street and College Road were shut down between 12th Avenue and Hagerty Drive.

OSU officials were alerted of the unattended backpack at about 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to a university public safety notice.

The Ohio Union was reopened shortly after 7:30 p.m.
