Software upgrade set to allow nearly 24-hour BuckeyeLink access after 6-week delay

May 7, 2014
A software upgrade launch set to increase the daily time students have access to the BuckeyeLink student center has been delayed, but is still scheduled to cost $20.5 million. The Office of the Chief Information Officer delayed the launch of its PeopleSoft software upgrade from Memorial Day weekend in late May to July 4 to 9 because of “too many risks,” according to the OCIO website. The application affects programs used by human resources and the student information system for managing things such as payroll preferences and contact information, according to the website. It’s also used by students when accessing the student center, where classes are scheduled. OCIO senior director… Read more

Evelyn Carrillo winding down career of destiny for Ohio State softball

April 21, 2014
Choosing which college to attend while still in high school can be an unnerving experience for any student-athlete. Location, facilities, education and family all factor into a decision that is going to impact the rest of their lives. For one Ohio State softball player, the decision became more personal than she could have ever imagined. Buckeye first baseman Evelyn Carrillo started playing softball at the age of 5 when her dad, Jose, bought her a bat and ball, and she has been hooked on the sport ever since. At Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Corona, Calif., Carrillo was a four-year captain. College softball coaches across the country began taking notice… Read more

Ohio State baseball wins weekend series against Murray State

April 21, 2014
In the midst of a slump on the field, the Ohio State baseball team decided to loosen things up in order to get back on track. The Buckeyes were playing tight in their losses to West Virginia and Ball State earlier in the week, redshirt-junior first baseman Josh Dezse said. So to loosen players up and help boost team morale, the coaches decided to have the team play wiffle ball during practice Thursday, which Dezse said helped against Murray State this weekend. “It was nice to just have fun all of us together, I know we’ve been grinding lately. Obviously losing is not fun so that was really nice to… Read more

Ohio State baseball looks to end 2-game losing streak in weekend series against Murray State

April 17, 2014
In order to finish out the final month of the regular season the way it wants to, the Ohio State baseball team needs to regroup in a series away from conference play. “It’s very good for us right now, we need to have some non-Big Ten play,” OSU coach Greg Beals said. After losses at West Virginia Tuesday and at home against Ball State the following day, the Buckeyes (21-17, 4-8) are scheduled to continue their non-conference slate with a three-game series against Murray State (16-18, 9-9) over the weekend at Bill Davis Stadium. Senior pitcher Greg Greve agreed with his coach and said the Buckeyes have to use this… Read more

Ohio State baseball drops 4th game in last 6, falls to Ball State, 8-6

April 16, 2014
It seems like nothing can go right for the Ohio State baseball team. After falling on the road to West Virginia Tuesday, the Buckeyes (21-17, 4-8) lost their second game in as many days, losing to Ball State 8-6 Wednesday at Bill Davis Stadium. After the loss to Ball State (25-12, 9-2), where OSU’s coach Greg Beals was in charge for eight seasons prior to coming to Columbus, Beals had nothing positive to say about OSU’s performance this week. “They need to play baseball … we had a poor secondary lead, we had a guy on deck who didn’t tell the guy to slide, we had a guy running to… Read more

Opinion: Adreian Payne’s love for ‘Princess Lacey’ shows what’s good in college sports

April 14, 2014
There are so many things to be cynical about in today’s college sports world. Cheating, greed, corruption and crime scandals have plagued the NCAA and its institutions for decades. Sometimes it can feel like being a college sports fan is a test of your morality. Far too many times, I have heard intelligent people blindly defending despicable actions of athletes or coaches simply because they want to support their team. An obsession with sports can bring out the worst in people. Yet it took an 8-year-old girl’s infatuation with the Michigan State basketball team and her special bond with senior center Adreian Payne to make me realize just how extraordinary… Read more

Ohio State softball loses weekend series against Purdue despite season-high attendance

April 13, 2014
A season-high 1,598 fans packed themselves inside Buckeye Field to watch the Ohio State softball team try and win its third Big Ten series of the season. After splitting game one and two of its weekend series against Purdue on Friday and Saturday, the crowd was roaring and the bleachers were shaking throughout all of Sunday’s exciting rubber match. But despite a late rally by OSU (20-20, 6-6) against the Boilermakers (21-21-1, 9-3), the Buckeyes came up just short, losing the game, 5-4. OSU lost both games to Purdue by one-run margins. With junior pitcher Olivia O’Reilly in the circle for the Buckeyes in the rubber match, Purdue stormed ahead… Read more

Following slow start to Big Ten slate, Ohio State baseball facing ‘must-win’ series against Penn State

April 10, 2014
When the Big Ten announced the 2014 Big Ten Baseball Tournament was expanding to an eight-team field for the first time in conference history after previously having just six eligible teams, the Ohio State baseball team believed it could show up to Omaha, Neb., as the No. 1-seed. Now three weeks into its conference schedule, the Buckeyes might soon be thankful for that expansion. The Buckeyes (19-14, 2-7) currently sit 10th in the Big Ten standings heading into their weekend series at home against Penn State (16-14, 4-1, third in the Big Ten) Friday, a series some players are calling a must-win. Last year, OSU swept Penn State in a… Read more

Ohio State softball uses late comeback to earn midweek sweep against Ohio

April 9, 2014
Sometimes all a team needs is the home field advantage to get back on the winning side. After being swept by archrival Michigan over a weekend series, the Ohio State softball team swept a doubleheader against Ohio University Wednesday at Buckeye Field. OSU junior pitcher Olivia O’Reilly took the circle to kick off the first game. After more than five hours of home runs, diving catches and last inning heroics, fittingly, O’Reilly was back in the game to close out a two-game sweep for the Buckeyes. OSU (19-18, 5-4) defeated OU (19-17, 4-2), 6-0 in game one and 10-9 in game two. After losing to the Bobcats, 7-3, March 7… Read more

Ohio State baseball downs Eastern Michigan, 8-1

April 9, 2014
One of the most important things a team has to do to succeed is win the games they are supposed to win. The Ohio State baseball team has done that all season long, and Tuesday was no exception in its game against Eastern Michigan. OSU (19-13, 2-7) won its ninth straight non-conference game against EMU (10-19, 1-8) defeating the Eagles, 8-1. While the win was good for the team, coach Greg Beals said after two straight weekend sweeps losing against Indiana and Nebraska, he would still like to see his team play at a higher level. “I told the guys afterwards that I don’t think we played a whole lot… Read more
