January 29, 2015
After nearly three months off, the Ohio State women’s tennis team is set to take a step toward a bigger stage with two matches on its first day back. The Buckeyes are scheduled to open their spring season at the Varsity Tennis Center with a doubleheader against West Virginia and Cleveland State on Thursday. The team most recently played at the Tennessee Fall Invitational, where coach Melissa Schaub said it was helpful to see how the girls compete in a dual-match setting. “Our two freshmen, Olivia Sneed and Anna Sanford, did really well, they played higher in the lineup the last day against Kentucky so that’s something good to see,”… Read more

Kobelt, Metka to compete for NCAA title in Men’s Doubles Championship

May 25, 2014
An impressive home winning streak isn’t the only success Ohio State’s men’s tennis has seen in the past few seasons. Senior Peter Kobelt and redshirt junior Kevin Metka are set to play in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Doubles Championship final on Monday, making it the second time in the last three years a Buckeye doubles team made it to the title round, according to a press release. Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola took the university’s first doubles tandem national crown in 2012, and Rola also went on to win the men’s NCAA Singles Championship in 2013. Redshirt-senior Peter Kobelt, redshirt-junior Kevin Metka and redshirt-sophomore Chris… Read more

Opinion: Record-breaking men’s tennis unstoppable on Columbus courts

March 31, 2014
With cameras raised and the volume so low you could hear a pin drop, Ohio State senior Peter Kobelt stepped up to the line to serve for match point against Northwestern’s senior Raleigh Smith. It seemed routine, as Kobelt has sealed so many matches for the OSU men’s tennis team this season. But this meant so much more than any other match. He lofted the ball up and, with one powerful swing, rocketed his serve at Smith, who could barely get a racket on it. Smith’s return barely made it over the net and Kobelt knew exactly what to do with it. He fired into the corner of the court… Read more

Over the past decade, the Fighting Illini (14-6, 4-1) have played second fiddle to the Buckeyes (21-2, 6-0) in the Big Ten, losing to OSU in the Big Ten Tournament in seven of the last eight seasons, and that tune held true Sunday as the Buckeyes won, 5-2, at the Varsity Tennis Center. Coach Ty Tucker toyed with the Buckeyes’ doubles lineup and split up his No. 6 ranked duo of senior Peter Kobelt… Read more

Ohio State men’s tennis ties NCAA record with 184th consecutive home victory, beats Michigan, 6-1

A share of history has been captured by the No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team. With a 6-1 defeat of Michigan Friday, the Buckeyes tied the NCAA all-time home win streak with their 184th consecutive victory. “It’s been a nerve-wracking experience going through this thing,” coach Ty Tucker said. “Every match has been counted … it’s nice that the guys go down in history.” The Stanford women’s tennis team originally set the record by going undefeated at home from 1999-2011. The Buckeyes (19-2, 4-0) began their streak during the 2003 season and didn’t let the Wolverines (9-7, 1-1) get in their way of the record book. The Buckeyes took… Read more
