Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell: ‘You can always find something that you gotta get better at’

March 6, 2014
When a team — or any part of a team — does not perform up to the standards that are set for it, typically the coach who leads the unit comes under fire. The Ohio State defense finished 47th in the nation after last season, giving up an average of 377.4 yard per game. It allowed an average of 268 yards per game through the air, a dismal figure that placed the group at 112th in the country (out of 125 Division I teams) in the category. Co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell addressed the topic of what was wrong with the defense, possibly bringing into question whether or… Read more

Ohio State loses second straight game, falls to Clemson, 40-35, in Orange Bowl

January 4, 2014
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Ohio State Buckeyes are officially on a losing streak. OSU lost its second straight game after winning 24 in a row over the last two seasons since Urban Meyer took over as head coach, falling to No. 12 Clemson (11-2, 7-1) in the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl, 40-35. Tiger quarterback, redshirt-senior Tajh Boyd, led a high-powered offense that amassed 576 total yards against the Buckeyes (12-2, 8-1) and the Clemson defense did enough down the stretch to win the game, turning junior quarterback Braxton Miller over twice in the game’s final three minutes. “We’re not a championship-caliber defense right now, although we think about the… Read more

Bradley Roby still rehabbing from knee injury, status uncertain for Orange Bowl

December 30, 2013
Already short one starter on the defensive side of the ball, the Ohio State Buckeyes could be without arguably their best defensive back for the Discover Orange Bowl against Clemson. Redshirt-junior cornerback Bradley Roby, who injured his knee late in OSU’s 34-24 loss to No. 4 Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship Game Dec. 7, is still working back to full strength, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell said Monday. “He’s still rehabbing right now,” Fickell said of Roby during a press conference. “We’re not exactly sure how he’ll be, and we kind of take it day-to-day.” Roby, a first-team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and… Read more

Ohio State arrives in Miami without starting defensive end Noah Spence

December 29, 2013
The Ohio State Buckeyes made the trip to Miami Sunday in preparation for the Discover Orange Bowl against No. 12 Clemson — but were short one key player. Sophomore starting defensive end Noah Spence did not fly down with his teammates and coaches, who will hold their first practice in the Sunshine State Sunday. “Noah didn’t fly down with us,” OSU coach Urban Meyer said in a press conference. “He’s working through some personal issues at home.” Spence played in all 13 games for the No. 7-ranked Buckeyes (12-1, 8-1) this season, recording 50 tackles and leading the team with eight sacks. “It’s one of those things that we’ve got… Read more

More than 1 change needed to fix Ohio State pass defense struggles

December 19, 2013
Ohio State’s pass defense in recent years is not exactly where Buckeye Nation is used to seeing it. In the final three seasons before coach Urban Meyer’s arrival in 2012, OSU’s defensive numbers in the passing game were among the best in the country. In 2009, the Buckeyes ranked 13th in the nation in pass yards per game given up (171.5 yards), were eighth in 2010 (165.5 yards) and were even 14th nationally during a 6-7 season (182 yards) in 2011. But things have been different since Meyer took over in 2012, as OSU ranked 78th nationally after giving up an average 243.5 yards per game last year, and is… Read more

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller mum on football future until after Orange Bowl

December 18, 2013
Ohio State junior quarterback Braxton Miller said he is going to wait until after the Buckeyes play in the Orange Bowl against Clemson to decide whether or not he will leave early for the NFL Draft. “I’m just focusing on getting better myself as an individual and getting the team ready and making sure I’m in the film room taking care of my business,” Miller said Wednesday. However, OSU’s signal caller feels he is prepared to play at the next level. “Oh, yeah. Of course, yeah. Definitely. Just like (when) I came from high school. (The) coaches (are) going to get you mentally ready for everything that you need to… Read more
