Crime brief: Man’s suspicious actions draw attention

A University Police officer reported that a man obstructed official business after the officer thought he was acting suspiciously. The man was walking on Woodruff Avenue, away from Ramseyer Hall, and turned onto High Street at about 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 19. He was carrying a backpack that appeared “nearly full,” which the officer thought was suspicious because he was an older man and the officer noticed that he didn’t normally see older men walking around with backpacks, according to a University Police report. Crime brief: Police confiscate handgun from intoxicated man

Police confiscated a handgun from a man not affiliated with the university after an Ohio State football game on Saturday. Officers first noticed the man at about 7 p.m. when he was carrying a traffic cone through the Neil Avenue Parking Garage, according to a police report. They saw him carry the cone onto an elevator and later, when they saw him riding in the passenger seat of a car that was on its way to the garage exit, they asked the driver to stop. Crime Brief: Two people reported missing

September 12, 2014
There were two reports of missing persons on the same day. The first case was at 11 a.m. on Sept. 3 at University Hospital East on Broad Street. A patient who was on special watch left the hospital without permission. Hospital officials were worried about him and sent an officer to see if he could be located, according to a University Police report. The officer didn’t find any leads and reported the patient as missing. The patient returned to the hospital the next day. Public indecency reported at concert

A 62-year-old man was advised to leave the Welcome Week concert for public indecency Friday. Two plainclothes officers saw that the man had his hand inside of his pocket and appeared to be moving it while he was watching girls dance nearby, according to a University Police report. When the man saw a uniformed officer nearby, he untucked his shirt and kept his hand in his pocket. Summer crime news: 2 public safety notices and 2 fires reported

It’s easy to get lost in numbers. There were about 310 reports of theft this summer on Ohio State’s campus, 15 reports of assault and four reports of robbery. But what does that mean? It means that in the span of this summer — from April 30 through Tuesday — there were about 2½ thefts every day. It means 15 people told police that they were violated in some way — and many of those reports came from the Wexner Medical Center. Crime brief: 5 underage offenses reported in 1 week

Classes are back in session and students have moved back on campus, but it hasn’t been a happy homecoming for everyone. There were five reports of offenses involving underage persons reported between Aug. 19 and Wednesday afternoon. “Offenses involving underage persons” refers to people under 21 years old buying or consuming alcohol. There were also two assaults reported this week and three reports of disorderly conduct on campus. Crime brief: Criminal mischief reported at Ohio State construction site

August 19, 2014
An assistant hall director of a North Campus residence hall reported criminal mischief after two men acted suspiciously at a construction site. The hall director saw the two men sitting in a piece of machinery last Thursday at about 1 a.m. and asked them if they were construction workers. The men said they were but didn’t provide any identification and quickly left the site with two other people who had been playing basketball nearby, according to a University Police report. Crime brief: Disorderly conduct reported twice in Ohio State parking garages

July 16, 2014
There were two incidents of disorderly conduct in parking garages this week. Both garages are located on South Campus near the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center. The first incident occurred July 7, but was reported three days later. A hospital nurse was walking in the Neil Avenue Parking Garage when a middle-aged man blocked her way on the stairwell, according to a University Police report. She said the man complained about her driving and grabbed her name badge, which she pulled back on the lanyard holding it. The nurse said she threatened to call the police and the man left. Crime brief: Trespasser accused of feeding swine at Ohio State facility

July 9, 2014
Someone might have fed the pigs at Ohio State’s swine center without permission. A male staff member reported criminal trespassing after finding that there were buckets of feed on the ground at the swine facility on Kays Avenue in Dublin. He said an unauthorized person had fed the pigs sometime between the evening of June 29 and the next morning, according to a University Police report. Another employee met with an officer on July 1 at the horse facility, which is also in Dublin. Crime brief: Disorderly conduct reported outside police station

July 4, 2014
A woman reported disorderly conduct in the parking lot near the University Police station at Blankenship Hall. She said she was talking to her husband while she sat in her car on June 24 when another woman pulled into a spot next to the passenger side of her car. The first woman then reported that the second woman hit her passenger side car mirror when she opened the door to get out of her car, according to a University Police report.
