Crime brief: At least 4 arrests during Mirror Lake Jump

There were various arrests during the Mirror Lake jump this year, including one incident where a student tried to take a police officer’s hat. There were at least three reports of disorderly conduct, three thefts and one offense involving underage persons at Mirror Lake last Tuesday and early Wednesday during the Mirror Lake jump. A 20-year-old male student was arrested for offenses involving underage persons on Nov. 26 at 12:20 a.m. He was taken to Franklin County Correctional Center, according to a University Police report, and his case was still open as of Wednesday evening. Crime brief: People try to break into Ohio Stadium on Veterans Day

Criminal trespassing Two men tried to climb a fence and get into Ohio Stadium on Tuesday at about 1:30 a.m. When a police officer approached the two as they were trying to hop over the fence on the west side of the stadium, one of them jumped down and joined someone on the outside of the stadium, while the other one joined a fourth person who was already inside the stadium. Crime brief: Another case of trespassing reported at Baker Systems

A man who was previously arrested after he was caught living in Baker Systems Engineering appears to have returned. A female staff member reported criminal trespassing at Baker Systems on Friday at about 12:30 p.m., and officers dispatched to the area found clothes in an unlocked locker and a court notice that belonged to a man who was previously warned against trespassing in OSU buildings, according to a University Police report. The report notes that the man was previously arrested in early October at Dreese Lab — the Department of Computer Science and Engineering — for trespassing. Crime brief: Rape reported in South Campus residence hall

Rape A female staff member reported a rape in a South Campus residence hall. The incident occurred Oct. 17 at about 4:30 p.m., but wasn’t reported until the evening of Oct. 22. Ohio State Police Captain Eric Whiteside said the investigation is ongoing and he couldn’t provide any more information. He said a public safety notice wasn’t issued because the police “have very limited information … and that was factored into the decision.” Whiteside later referred The Lantern to University Police’s timely warning policy. Crime brief: 14 alcohol-related incidents reported before Ohio State football game

There were 12 reports of open container and two reports of offenses involving underage persons on Saturday afternoon. The incidents were reported in the parking lots of Ohio Stadium, at the French Field House and in the parking lot of St. John Arena and Buckeye Lot. The incidents took place from approximately 12:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., which is when Ohio State’s homecoming game against Rutgers started.  Tailgaters are not permitted to have open containers of alcohol by state and city laws. Crime brief: Man caught with ‘base of operations’ in Baker Systems

A 28-year-old man who wasn’t supposed to be in any Ohio State buildings was arrested on campus for criminal trespassing. A professor became suspicious when he heard someone trying to operate a lock on a rarely used door in Baker Systems Engineering on Saturday at about 3 p.m. When a man entered, the professor approached him and the man left, according to a University Police report. The professor later found out that one of his peers has installed a camera in the Baker suite — which has offices, a kitchen and a central lobby area — to capture the man entering the building. Crime brief: Man’s suspicious actions draw attention

A University Police officer reported that a man obstructed official business after the officer thought he was acting suspiciously. The man was walking on Woodruff Avenue, away from Ramseyer Hall, and turned onto High Street at about 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 19. He was carrying a backpack that appeared “nearly full,” which the officer thought was suspicious because he was an older man and the officer noticed that he didn’t normally see older men walking around with backpacks, according to a University Police report. Crime brief: Police confiscate handgun from intoxicated man

September 18, 2014
Police confiscated a handgun from a man not affiliated with the university after an Ohio State football game on Saturday. Officers first noticed the man at about 7 p.m. when he was carrying a traffic cone through the Neil Avenue Parking Garage, according to a police report. They saw him carry the cone onto an elevator and later, when they saw him riding in the passenger seat of a car that was on its way to the garage exit, they asked the driver to stop. Crime Brief: Two people reported missing

September 12, 2014
There were two reports of missing persons on the same day. The first case was at 11 a.m. on Sept. 3 at University Hospital East on Broad Street. A patient who was on special watch left the hospital without permission. Hospital officials were worried about him and sent an officer to see if he could be located, according to a University Police report. The officer didn’t find any leads and reported the patient as missing. The patient returned to the hospital the next day. A 62-year-old man was advised to leave the Welcome Week concert for public indecency Friday. Two plainclothes officers saw that the man had his hand inside of his pocket and appeared to be moving it while he was watching girls dance nearby, according to a University Police report. When the man saw a uniformed officer nearby, he untucked his shirt and kept his hand in his pocket.
