Provost Joseph Steinmetz is happy where he is, despite Texas job opportunity

March 8, 2015
It’s going to take a lot more than interest from the University of Texas to get Joseph Steinmetz, Ohio State’s provost and executive vice president, to leave Columbus. Steinmetz was recently named as a candidate for the position of president of the University of Texas, but withdrew his name from consideration. “It was a huge decision,” Steinmetz said. “First of all, I was flattered that the University of Texas thought I could be a candidate. It’s a great American university just like this one is, but in my mind, I’m really happy with the position I have here.” At face value, it might seem to some that becoming the president… Read more

Ohio State grads taken on virtual campus tour during Summer Commencement address

August 10, 2014
A campus tour typically kicks off a student’s college career. However, graduates at the 2014 Ohio State Summer Commencement concluded their time at OSU with one as well. Former interim President Joseph Alutto used his address at Sunday’s ceremony in the Schottenstein Center to convince attendants not to fear the future in the name of the current graduating class. His approach centered on a virtual, imaginative tour of OSU, describing to more than 1,000 graduates in attendance the history and achievements made within the walls of the Fisher College of Business, Ohio Stadium, the engineering buildings, the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library and the Ohio Union, among other campus staples.… Read more

Summer Commencement speaker selection involved students, set to cost $78K

July 18, 2014
Unlike Spring Commencement, students were involved in the speaker selection process that unanimously chose former Interim President Joseph Alutto to speak at Summer Commencement. In addition, Summer Commencement is set to cost nearly $78,000, while Spring Commencement totaled about $420,000, an Ohio State spokeswoman said in an email. This time around, a newly configured Commencement Speaker Advisory Committee composed of three students, four staff members and six faculty selected the speaker rather than a group of top-ranking OSU officials. The three students each represented one of OSU’s student government organizations —Undergraduate Student Government, the Council of Graduate Students, and the Inter-Professional Council. They were selected by the leadership of each… Read more

Alutto will receive an honorary Doctor of Higher Education during the event. “We are honored to have Joseph Alutto address our graduates and their families at the university’s 407th commencement ceremony,” President Michael Drake said in the release.… Read more

Ohio State travels from Gordon Gee to Michael Drake

June 25, 2014
It took Ohio State a calendar year to travel from one president to the next. Dr. Michael Drake will assume his new position as Ohio State president Monday, a day less than a year since E. Gordon Gee’s retirement from the position July 1, 2013. Joseph Alutto became the interim president the day Gee retired. Drake will be OSU’s 15th president and its first black president. The interim: Ohio State sails on in year of transition

April 14, 2014
Ohio State is in some ways like a ship: the president is the captain, administrators are the crew and students are the passengers, along for the ride. And for a ship the size of OSU, the direction can’t be changed overnight. The past year at OSU can be considered a turning point. The era of former university President E. Gordon Gee has ended, and the time of Dr. Michael Drake has yet to begin. The ship is veering, preparing for a turn, but it hasn’t quite made it yet. OSU is in transition, with Interim President Joseph Alutto at the helm. OSU spent several months over the last academic year… Read more

Joseph Alutto: A university president raised on ‘unconditional love and really good food’

December 2, 2013
Ohio State Interim President Joseph Alutto didn’t grow up intending to become president of one of the largest universities in the nation. His parents were working class. He was the first in his family to attend college and he paid his own way through experiences he said shaped his life. “My father was a truck driver, he had a sixth grade education,” Alutto said in an interview with The Lantern Sept. 23. “My mother was this wonderful old Italian woman who believed that unconditional love and really good food made for unconditional love. Both of whom knew nothing about college.” That upbringing gave Alutto a passion for education from an… Read more
