Opinion: Departures could make or break future for Ohio State men’s basketball

March 22, 2015
When the final buzzer rang Saturday night in Portland, Ore., four Ohio State basketball players walked off the court for the final time as Buckeyes. At least four, I should say. The OSU careers of seniors Sam Thompson, Shannon Scott, Amir Williams and Trey McDonald are over, and their legacy is a question mark — much like the Buckeyes’ future outlook. Despite being part of 109 wins for the Scarlet and Gray, Thompson, Scott, Williams and McDonald never seemed to make their mark. After a Final Four run as freshmen and an Elite Eight finish as sophomores, the quartet failed to fullfil their potential after the departures of Deshaun Thomas… Read more

Mix of youth and experience set to drive Ohio State men’s basketball

October 2, 2014
With six new faces as well as five returning seniors in the fold, the Ohio State men’s basketball team is working to quickly blend the age groups before the season tips off. The team hosted its 2014 media day Thursday at the Schottenstein Center, and one of the main topics discussed by the players and coach Thad Matta was dealing with the divide in age and experience. “There are some pieces that are back, and those guys are consistent,” Matta said. “We have worked hard to integrate the new players so they mesh well and challenge the returning players to work and fight for a spot.” Matta said the character… Read more

With added personnel, Thad Matta looking for more production from low post for Ohio State men’s basketball

April 21, 2014
For a time early in Thad Matta’s career as the Ohio State men’s basketball coach, his teams were built around the center position. Terence Dials, Greg Oden, Kosta Koufos, B.J. Mullens and Jared Sullinger were all standout post presences that helped carry the Buckeyes under Matta. But over the last two seasons — since Sullinger left for the NBA after two seasons in Columbus — the Buckeyes have had a bit of a crisis in the post. With junior centers Amir Williams and Trey McDonald — who averaged a combined 9.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last season — trading time down low, the Buckeyes have been forced to… Read more

Virginia Tech transfer Trevor Thompson added to Ohio State men’s basketball roster, to sit out 2014-15 season

April 18, 2014
Seniors Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. might be gone, along with junior LaQuinton Ross and sophomore Amedeo Della Valle, but Ohio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta is not wasting any time filling those vacancies. After announcing that former-Temple redshirt-junior forward Anthony Lee would transfer to Ohio State last month, Matta has secured another inside presence in Trevor Thompson. Thompson, who spent his freshman season with Virginia Tech, can start playing for the Buckeyes beginning in 2015-16 after sitting out for a season per NCAA transfer rules. Thompson tweeted his excitement in joining the Buckeyes on April 13, a day after attending the 2014 Spring Game at Ohio Stadium.… Read more

Ohio State men’s basketball lands Virginia Tech transfer Trevor Thompson

April 13, 2014
To say the Ohio State basketball team is going through an overhaul is a bit of an understatement. First, the Buckeyes saw the careers of two of the most decorated players in program history — a total of 119 wins — come to a close on a cold, windy day in Buffalo, N.Y., more than three weeks ago when senior guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. battled to a 60-59 loss Dayton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Two days later, sophomore guard Amedeo Della Valle told coach Thad Matta of his intentions to leave Columbus and head back home to Europe to pursue a professional basketball… Read more
