What would a fan expect from a Bowling Green versus Ohio State hockey game?Try six goals and 15 penalties, for starters. It was that type of Central Collegiate Hockey Association contest Sunday afternoon at the Ohio Expositions Center.”We had to find a way to win this afternoon – even if we played poorly – and we did,” said Buckeyes coach John Markell of the battle the two teams waged. The contest began when OSU center Hugo Boisvert won the face-off, evaded BG defenders, and slid the puck past goaltender Shawn Timm 51 seconds into the game for his team-leading thirteenth goal of the season.Boisvert’s goal was answered not once by Bowling Green, but twice, as forward Brad Holzinger shot a rocket past OSU freshman Jeff Maund in the first, then when Chris Bonvie scored a power-play goal, placing the Falcons up 2-1 after two. “I thought Bowling Green played a very good game, as expected,” said Markell. “But they have tendencies to get nervous at the end,” he added. That’s when the Falcons seemed to trade their skates in for tennis shoes as they allowed the Ohio State second line to deliver three unanswered goals, one from each of its three members, who collectively scored all eight third-period points.”We haven’t had a breakthrough game in a while,” said OSU junior center Chris Richards. “And it’s about time our line stepped it up,” he added. Richards began the Buckeye blitz when he tied the game on a play which he began.Linemates Todd Compeau and Dan Cousineau assisted Richards after he stole the puck, passed it around, got it back, and placed it past Timm, scoring his ninth goal of the season.Less than two minutes later, the Buckeyes scored again when Dan Cousineau took a shot which was saved by Timm, but plucked out of the air by Compeau and knocked into the net. It would prove to be the game-winner, but not the last of the afternoon.Cousineau would add an insurance goal at the 10:42 mark, placing the game pretty much out of reach for the Falcons, 4-2.Cousineau, an OSU assisting captain, scored three points via a goal and a pair of assists in that third period, helping to lift the Buckeyes over the Falcons.”We’ve had a lot of different guys step up, and today it was just my turn,” he said. The upper-class connection of that second line proved not only fatal to Bowling Green, but more importantly, provided much-needed leadership on a young hockey team.”Upper classmen have to provide leadership,” said Markell. “Hopefully we have the younger guys looking at them and seeing how they did it.” “I think that helps with the kids’ development,” added Markell.Cousineau, however, was quick to comment on the team approach.”It’s not just the young guys who are learning,” he said. “We’re all learning too. That’s something that will continue to make this team great,” he added. Ohio State upped its record to 12-10-1 overall, 9-9-0 in the CCHA, jumping ahead of Ferris State and Notre Dame in the CCHA standings. The Buckeyes have now won three straight games at home, and have two remaining games next week to round out the five game homestand.
