In a shower of energy, jokes, props and confetti, Carrot Top dazzled a sold-out audience at Mershon Auditorium Thursday night.Combining physical comedy with traditional stand-up and a reliance on trunk loads of his hilarious and whimsical props, Carrot Top touched on an array of subjects, ranging from President Clinton’s recent scandal to a lot of local humor.’I did not sleep with that woman,’ Carrot Top said in a nearly perfect impersonation of the president.Commenting on college life and living in and around Columbus, Carrot Top showed how much he knew about the area.He talked about the size of Ohio State, saying he doesn’t blame OSU students for taking more than four years to graduate because it would take that long just to walk to classes, not to mention finding a parking spot.Carrot Top also put in an endorsement to keep High Street just the way it is, calling it a Disneyland for drunks.’You guys don’t get a diploma when you graduate,’ he said. ‘They just stamp your hand.’ Carrot Top also added a Columbus flavor to other parts of the show by letting the audience know it was wrong to tear down the old Ohio penitentiary to build a sports complex. He said most athletes end up there anyway. In fact, Columbus and the destruction of the penitentiary may gain national recognition through Carrot Top’s shows.’When I heard that, I thought it was just so ironic and hilarious,’ Carrot Top said. ‘I might add that to all of my shows.’The comedian called his performance a seminar rather than a comedy show. He wanted to inform the audience about how not to let your parents know how much you drink. He said the thing that always tipped his parents off about his drinking was when he would tilt the glass every time he poured himself a glass of milk. The show itself took on a rock concert feel from the beginning. Before the show began, the audience bounced a large beach ball around the auditorium. The stage had a psychedelic look, with purple, blue and pink lighting, peace signs and a large silhouetted carrot on the backdrop. When Carrot Top took the stage, Mershon was engulfed in a tidal wave of rock music and strobe lights. Carrot Top is a nationally-known comedian and actor who has appeared on ‘The Tonight Show,’ ‘Live With Regis and Kathie Lee’ and ‘Politically Incorrect.’ He has two movies coming out in 1998; ‘Dennis the Menace II,’ and ‘Chairman of the Board,’ which opens March 13.
