Former campus-area landlord and bar owner, Albert J. DeSantis was sentenced Monday to 63 months in prison and has to pay $1.6 million in restitution to investors.Susan J. Dlott sentenced DeSantis after he was convicted of five counts of mail fraud and one count of securities fraud in June. ‘At the trial, the government proved that DeSantis had fraudulently misrepresented to potential investors the risk factors, investor suitability, liquidity of the interests of the interests and the fact that twice the legally allowable commission percentage for the sale was paid, but never disclosed to investors. The court concluded that 28 Akron-area investors lost $1,664,250 to the scheme,’ according to news release from the office of the United States Attorney, Southern District of Ohio. After DeSantis has served his jail term, DeSantis will be on three years supervision and must serve 40 hours of community service for one year, the release said.In 1989, DeSantis was jailed for federal tax evasion, then was put on probation for three years.DeSantis violated probation laws when he was found to have close links to six campus-area bars. He was again jailed for two years, according to previous Lantern articles.DeSantis is in the custody of U.S. Marshals where he will remain until the outcome of his appeal, the release said.
