The Ohio State women’s basketball team is making a comeback in the Big Ten season.OSU defeated the 14th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, 66-54, on Sunday, after coming off a win at Minnesota, 73-60, on Friday. The weekend success ran the Buckeyes’ record to 11-5, 4-3 in the Big Ten”This is a substantial win to the program,” said OSU coach Beth Burns on Sunday. The Buckeyes dominated the Badgers throughout the entire game.OSU’s defense came out strong and keyed on the Badgers’ 29 turnovers. “I would really like to compliment Ohio State on their defensive basketball game,” said University of Wisconsin coach Jane Albright-Dieterle. “I think it completely took us out of the game, we are normally a team that does not have many turnovers and we shoot very well.”The Badgers were the first on the board as center Amy Wiersma dropped in a free throw. The Badgers never regained the lead.”The first 20 minutes of this game today is as good as it gets in terms of doing exactly what you set out to do,” said Burns. “Our team did it letter-perfect.”With 1:40 remaining in the first half, freshman guard Jamie Lewis nailed a 3-pointer from the right side of the court, putting the Buckeyes up by 18 points.Dee Dee Pate hit a pair of free throws for the Badgers to cut the lead to 16, but with only five seconds remaining, forward Michaela Moua added two more points to put the Buckeyes in the lead at the end of the first half, 37-19.”I wanted to be a spark coming off the bench,” said Moua. “I think my offense comes from my defense, when I play good defense my offense will come.”In the last eight minutes of the game, the team may have become overconfident of a win, as the Badgers attempted to come back. Wisconsin tried to cut the lead, but the Badgers could get no closer than the final margin.”Our letdown was not a letdown, it was that we were excited,” said Burns. Wisconsin guard Dee Dee Pate received her fifth personal foul with 5:07 remaining in the game, which may have caused some problems for the Badgers.”Pate’s foul trouble was a bonus because I think she’s the one person on their team that can do something to neutralize pressure,” said Burns. OSU was led offensively by forward Marrita Porter with a game-high of 19 points and eight rebounds. Not far behind Porter was Larecha Jones contributing 15 points. The Buckeyes travel to Purdue on Friday and Penn State on Sunday.
