Marcel Marceau will receive the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the Ohio State winter quarter commencement ceremony.Marceau is an internationally-acclaimed movement artist. His most famous character is Bip, known for his striped pullover and opera hat.One of OSU’s highest honors is being given to Marceau in recognition of his contributions to theatre and mime, said Lesley Ferris, professor of theatre.”I am very thankful that the university recognizes what he has brought the world and this art form,” said Jeanine Thompson, assistant professor and movement specialist in the department of theatre.Thompson has studied with Marceau and has been a demonstrator in his seminars since 1987. She has been teaching his work since 1990.”It has been an extraordinary and challenging journey with him,” Thompson said. “His technique is based on the essence of thought and emotion.”Currently on his 50th anniversary tour of North America, Marceau will hold workshops for theatre students on Wednesday, March 18 in the Thurber Theatre in the Drake Union. The next day, Marceau will host a workshop for theatre faculty from around the state.
