The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team got its revenge Saturday as team members combined their skills to outscore Illinois 226.8 to 223.05.”Illinois let it be known that they planned on winning the meet, but we (OSU) didn’t want to let them beat us in our own gym,” said head coach Miles Avery. “We performed with a lot of pride, that’s what won the meet.”Just one week earlier, the Illini, ranked second in the Big Ten, beat the Buckeyes, ranked fourth in the Big Ten, by less than a point at the Windy City Invitational.Tying for second place in the all-around competition with a score of 55.4, were juniors Mike Morgan and Doug Stibel.Morgan placed first on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.65. He placed second on the still rings, with a 9.4, tying with OSU freshman Jamie Natalie and Illini Travis Ramagnoli. Morgan and Natalie also tied for third on the vault, both scoring a 9.4. Scoring another 9.4, Morgan tied for second on the parallel bars with OSU junior Peter Laundry.”Overall, I showed a lot of improvement since last weekend, but there is still work that needs to be done, individually and as a team,” Morgan said. Stibel finished strong on the horizontal bar, earning first place with a score of 9.75, second on vault with a 9.45, and second on the floor exercise posting a 9.6.”I didn’t compete as well as I would have liked because I was injured at the beginning of the week and missed some practice time,” Stibel said. Natalie finished second on the horizontal bar with Ramagnoli and Jon Corbitt of Illinois, all scoring a 9.65, and Laundry won on the still rings with a score of 9.65.”I was nervous at first and didn’t hit my routines as well as I wanted to,” Natalie said. Also placing for the Buckeyes was junior Tim Elsner, who placed second on the pommel horse with a score of 9.45, and freshman Jay Nardelli who placed third on the pommel horse, scoring a 9.4. The Buckeyes host Minnesota in St. John Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m.”This weekend it will be very important for us to beat Minnesota, who typically has a very good team,” Avery said. “It will be a good meet for both teams.”The last time OSU lost in a dual meet at home was in 1991, Avery said.
