An outstanding performance Friday night against Bowling Green gave the Ohio State women’s gymnastics team their first win of the season.The OSU women’s gymnastics team has a record of 1-1, the only loss coming to 4th-ranked Michigan.The Buckeyes plowed over Bowling Green with a team total of 191.925 to Bowling Green’s 186.875.Buckeye standouts junior Mindi Farmer, freshman Lindsey Vagedes and junior Susan Eckman, all tied for first place in the floor exercise, each scoring a 9.8.Vagedes also placed first on vault, earning a score of 9.85, first on the balance beam with a score of 9.775, and first in the all-around with a total of 39.025.”This is only my second meet and I am happy with the way things turned out,” Vagedes said. “We still have some minor things to overcome and we just need to stay focused.” Adding to her already amazing performance, Eckman placed first on the uneven parallel bars, posting a score of 9.875, second on vault with a score of 9.8, and second in the all-around with a total score of 38.575.”This was my first time in the all-around and it was fun to put all four events together,” Eckman said. “I also performed my best floor exercise ever at Ohio State.”Farmer placed second on the balance beam with a score of 9.75 and third in the all-around with a total score of 37.650.”I was pleased with our performance this week,” Farmer said. “We are definitely improving and have worked very hard in practice these last few days.”Senior Stefanie Light earned second on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 9.675.”Overall, we did much better this week and showed a lot of improvement,” said head coach Larry Cox. “There was a big difference in execution and form, but we also counted five falls this week, as opposed to one fall last week.”The freshman are really stepping into some leadership positions and there are some outstanding returning gymnasts as well, Cox said.”We seem to be coming together as a team and we just have some minor technical errors to improve,” Eckman said. “Our major skills are right on track.” “I think we are as good as we were last year and by the end of this season we will be better than we were last year,” Cox said.This Friday, in a dual meet, OSU faces Towson State, of Towson, Md. and Kent State at 7:30 p.m. in Larkins Hall.
