The first four games of the season, the Ohio State running game looked like a runaway train barreling through the opposition’s defensive unit. However in the last two games, OSU hasn’t been able to establish the running game consistently.First, Wisconsin held OSU’s rushing game to under 80 yards. Then Purdue limited the Buckeyes to 155 yards, nearly 100 yards short of their season average.’I am not happy with our running game,’ said head coach John Cooper. ‘We need to get better there in a hurry. You have to be able to run the football in this league.’OSU’s leading rusher, Pepe Pearson, gained 152 yards on 26 carries against the Boilermakers last week. But on 23 of those 26 carries, he could manage only 42 yards. The other 110 yards came on three sprints of 20, 26 and 64 yards, respectively.’As a group, we are not happy with the last two outings,’ Pearson said. ‘I don’t think we have been as crisp as we were at the beginning of the season.’The one main factor that has inhibited the running game’s success, is the way other teams are playing the Buckeyes. Both Wisconsin and Purdue brought eight or more men up to the line of scrimmage to key on the run.’Other teams are putting eight guys in a box and doing some line twists,’ said Eric Gohlstin an OSU right tackle. ‘This screws us up by slowing us down and making us take our time and that means we can’t be so aggressive.’Pearson claims that even though the opposing teams are looking to shut down the run, OSU should still be able to move the ball on the ground.’I just think it’s a case of opposing defenses trying to stop our running game by putting nine or 10 guys on the line of scrimmage,’ Pearson said. ‘Even with that I think we should be able to have more success with the run.”I think we are going to have to do some different things to get our running game going again,’ he said. When asked if he felt Iowa would play the same defensive scheme as the Badgers and Boilermakers, Cooper said, ‘Absolutely. No question about it. They will play us with some pressure.’Cooper also said the offense needs to be more consistent against the Hawkeyes.
