Portrayal of greek life inaccurate

OK, so here it is – the expected rebuttal to Nathan Crabbe’s crass and inappropriate editorial about greek life. His little greek fantasy world IS accurate in made-for-TV movies, “Saturday Night Live” skits and films like Animal House, but Nathan, it has already been done; everyone knows that your portrayal of greek life is at most redundant and anything but accurate. The fact is that greek organizations would not exist if people did not want to join. Sorority rush numbers would have gone down this year if us sorority women were the blond, “Baywatch” stereotypical bimbos you claim we are. For the first time ever at Ohio State, incoming freshmen women were given the opportunity to learn about the greek system, see the greeks in action and experience every thing else this campus has to offer before deciding to rush – and rush numbers increased this year, thus reinforcing our credibility. Clearly the greeks must be doing something right.Oh and greeks do have friends both inside and outside of the greek system. We even have friends on the Lantern staff. In fact some of us are Lantern staff writers, and the majority of the student account executives, including myself, who sell the advertising space that KEEPS THIS PAPER AFLOAT are greek. And we will continue to sell that space despite your ignorant remarks about our frequent binge drinking and anorexic tendencies which, according to you, are problems targeting only females in the greek system it seems. Who are you kidding? And a side to the story that you may or may not have overlooked is that incoming president William Kirwan was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. His wife is an active alumna of Delta Delta Delta sorority. If anything, the pair will look to support the greeks and their standards in order to keep the system strong, rest assured Mr. Crabbe. The horror that the future president of our beloved institution is a successful, articulate, accomplished and intellectual GREEK!! I guess HE made the right connections. And I also suppose that Gordon Gee did as well because he was in a fraternity… and God forbid you take the liberty to degrade COACH WOODY HAYES, a former member of Sigma Chi fraternity merely because he was greek!Times are changing, but the greek system is adapting to these changes with an open mind. It’s time that the Lantern held the same attitude. At least be creative and get some new material if you are going to slam us, Mr. Crabbe. We have been here for over a hundred years and we’re not planning on leaving anytime soon.
