Registered student organizations can now use basic office supplies provided in the Student Resource Room which opens today in Ohio Union 306.The room, spearheaded by USG, will include three computers with Internet access, a copy machine, fax machine, laminator and other assorted office supplies including butcher paper, glue, scissors, markers and hole punchers.Jenny Nelson, director of special projects in USG cabinet, and Colin O’Brien, chief of staff in USG cabinet, devised the proposal which the Council on Student Affairs agreed to give an initial $28,000 to finance the room. The council also agreed to cover operations expenses for the next two years. At the end of that period, it will evaluate the use of the room to decide if it will continue to contribute funds.David Williams II, vice president of the Office of Student Affairs said the money came from a Student Affairs endowment used to help support student organizations like USG.This money pays for the supplies in the room and will pay the salary of a work-study student hired by Student Organizations Services to monitor the room, Nelson said.O’Brien said he and Nelson are responsible for how the money will be spent. He said money not already used for purchasing equipment and set aside for salary will go toward maintaining the facility. All registered student organizations will receive their first 100 copies free, and then copies will cost 3 cents each, Nelson said.”Not only will it provide a lot of resources for these organizations, but it will also facilitate interaction between organizations,” she said. The resource room will likely be open from noon to 8 p.m., on a trial basis until the best hours can be determined, she said.Nelson notified the presidents of student organizations by e-mail in the fall for suggestions on software and other supplies. She received a number of positive responses she said.Samantha Cothern, assistant director of Operations and Training in the Ohio Unions said room 306 was actually the second choice for the resource room after room 313 was turned down due to old carpeting. Cothern said 306 is a smaller room but it was just redone last.
