Finals week could soon be less rushed and graduation may be pushed back a day, if USG has its way.USG is considering a bill, the Reading and Graduation Day Act, that would make the Monday of finals week a reading day and finals Tuesday through Friday. Therefore, graduation would fall back a day to Saturday.”Ohio University and many other colleges and universities throughout the country allow a study day for students,” said Jeremy Deutsch, USG member and sponsor of the bill. “An extra day allows students to better prepare themselves for their finals.””No way, I would never want to take a final on Friday,” said Michelle Duncan, a senior majoring in human resources.Pushing finals back a day would allow for a Saturday graduation. This would alleviate the trouble of parents and family members having to take a day off from work to attend graduation ceremonies.”I think a Saturday graduation is a great idea,” said Jennifer Wiggins, a senior majoring in business. “That would make it a lot easier on families, especially those from out-of-state.”Some parents and family members find it difficult to attend a Friday graduation because of work responsibilities.”Having a Friday graduation can also put an economic burden on some families and this bill would alleviate most of those burdens,” Deutsch said.”Traveling, hotel rooms and food can get expensive when parents have to spend the night because graduation starts at 9 a.m.,” Wiggins said. “A Saturday graduation would help with some of those expenses.””I think it’s better to get out as soon as possible,” said Erin Weaver, a senior majoring in management and information systems. When and if the Reading and Graduation Day Act passes in USG, it will be sent to the Board of Trustees for further consideration.
