“How Much Longer” will I be “Tongue Tied” about the self-titled debut album by Eve 6?This L.A.-based trio is composed of three men all under the age of 20: Max Collins, the 19-year-old bass player and lyricist, Jon Siebels, the 18-year-old guitarist and Tony Fagenson, the 19-year-old drummer. The men were brought together by their desire to play in a rock band and their love of punk music. The music, however, all sounded the same. They shared the same basic musical chords and rhetoric lyrics. I couldn`t determine one song from another without looking at the track number on my CD player.”I hear words and clips and phrases…Or am I origami,” like their lyrics. This is a sample of how difficult to understand the lyrics are from the song “Inside Out,” their first single. This song, according to a press release issued by RCA Records, is supposed to be about “wanting people to understand you” and realizing there is a big distinction between internal reality and what is portrayed on the outside.Did they not understand the difference between real life and fantasy before they formed their group in 1993?I find it difficult to listen to a song (Inside Out) when part of the lyrics say, “Want to put my tender heart in a blender… Watch it spin round to a beautiful oblivion.””The songs come from our own experiences, from relationships, heartbreak and the idea of wanting to break out and be understood,” Max said in the RCA press release.Granted, you are able to understand what the lyrics say but you would have a hard time understanding the partially structured sixth-grade sentences. The song “Showerhead” is another good example of bad music.”And if I may stop by when you`re living in the next town 10 years down the road… A good time for a dime and a crushed cigarette making bets with your body on the avenue.” Say what? The lyrics printed in the CD jacket remind me of a bad e.e. cummings poem, lacking punctuation and easily recognizable sentences. The songs, however, do capture a feeling of anxiety and frustration that many teens in today`s world can relate to. These small town teens have nowhere to go because there are never enough employment opportunities. Without money how can these teens go anywhere? However, there are two songs which caught my attention.”Saturday Night” is the best song on the album. It has lyrics which flow together and actually make sense. “We both know the truth… It`s false behind the dirty talk the dirty sheets the sexy walk.”I could really relate to “Small Town Trap” because I grew up in a small town. The chorus of this song screams what generations of teens have been trying to say for years. They are “wishing it was someplace else” but in reality it is the same place almost every teen before them has been trapped in.
