An Ohio University junior studying abroad in Costa Rica drowned Saturday after falling into a waterfall in a rain forest.Jennifer Ritzmann, 20, of Cleveland Heights, Ohio was participating in an international student exchange program at the Tropical Biology and Conservation Center at the Monteverde Institute. She was an environmental and plant biology major.Just before dusk on Saturday, Ritzmann was walking alone on a path alongside the waterfall when she slipped and fell, apparently hitting her head and drowning, according to an OU statement. That night, Ritzmann had told a fellow student she would be back before nightfall, according to the statement.Sunday afternoon, after Ritzmann failed to return, a search party organized by the institute found the body. Ritzmann`s parents flew to Costa Rica yesterday to claim the body, according to a news release. Connie Perdreau, OU`s study abroad program coordinator and a close friend of Ritzmann, said Ritzmann was involved in the program through the Council on International Educational Exchange, a consortium affiliated with OU. Others who had participated in the program recommended Ritzmann attend, Perdreau said.Participating in the program meant a lot to Ritzmann because she had a dream to do forestry work in Costa Rica and was committed to preserving the rain forest, Perdreau said. “She was so well motivated and it really meant a lot to her to be able to go. This is such a tragedy,” Perdreau said. A memorial service has not been planned, but the university will support one in the future if Ritzmann`s family wishes, said OU Interim Dean of Students Terry Hogan.
