The Columbus Crew will set foot in Ohio Stadium for the last time ever Sunday when they play the two-time Major League Soccer champion D.C. United in Game 2 of the MLS Eastern Conference Finals.Next year the Crew will have its own home. They will play in a new soccer-specific stadium, which is being built on the grounds of the Ohio Expo Center.”Ohio Stadium has been good for us. It’s always been an advantage to play there,” said coach Tom Fitzgerald. “We want to leave a good impression and that would certainly be a win against D.C.”D.C. United won Game 1 of the best-of-three series at RFK Stadium, in D.C. The result left the nation’s capital team a win away from going to the MLS Cup in Pasadena, Calif. But first D.C. United will have to defeat a Columbus team who is tough to beat at home. The Crew is 30-18 at the ‘Shoe.”(The ‘Shoe) is an advantage for us because we play at it all the time,” said Crew forward Brian McBride. “Not mentioning the fact that we have good fans.”These fans have helped the Crew with their presence at Ohio Stadium. In each of the three years the Crew played at the ‘Shoe, almost 200,000 people attended the games, averaging 15,622 per game. The Crew returned their support in the form of wins.”The small confines of the field helped the team win, which made the experience at Ohio Stadium more enjoyable,” said Jim Tuttle, a junior majoring in business management, who has been a Crew fan since the MLS started. But in order to not disappoint the fans who will be at the ‘Shoe for this last game, Columbus will have to stop a 13 consecutive playoff win streak set by D.C. United. The streak includes the two games in which D.C. swept the Crew on last year’s Eastern Conference Finals.”It doesn’t matter anymore. We have to forget about what’s happened before,” Fitzgerald said. “The players have to convince themselves to go on the field and win.”Fitzgerald said the offense will play an important role on whether or not the team succeeds Sunday.”(Forwards) McBride and Stern John have to step up and play their best game,” he said. “If they do that then we will win.”McBride agrees with Fitzgerald’s position. He said that if they had capitalized on their scoring chances in the first game they would be in a better position going into Game 2.”We need to take advantage of our breaks. We know D.C. won’t give us much,” he said. D.C. United dominated Game 1 but they could only score with 20 minutes left in the game, on a deflection by forward Tony Sanneh. Midfielder Marco Etcheverry put it away with a goal in the 78th minute.Crew defender Thomas Dooley said Sunday’s game was the worst game they had against the United so far.”We didn’t keep the ball well and we didn’t create chances to score. The ones we did we couldn’t finish,” Dooley said. “We usually play good against D.C., we just can’t hold the score. We have to play our own game again this Sunday.”D.C. United will be the first and last team to play against the Crew in the ‘Shoe. On April 13, 1996, both teams played on the Crew’s inaugural home game. Columbus won 4-0 on that occasion.Midfielders Brian Maisonneuve and Robert Warzycha are the only Crew players not available for Sunday’s game. Maisonneuve is injured and Warzycha is out because of family problems.
