They call it “The Greatest Show on Earth,” five days of adventure, fun and magic and it’s all at the Schottenstein Center this month. After being away from the Columbus area for over 10 years, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is making its debut appearance at the Schottenstein Center. The show travels in two separate units, a blue and a red, which crisscross the country. Each unit has different acts and attractions. The show changes every two years and with those changes come new acts, said Jacquie Kranyak, of Kranyak and Associates, the marketing and publicity firm hired by the circus for this month’s show. “There is even a new RingMaster,” Kranyak said. The audience need not worry though; the show still has classic acts like the tall man, high wire acrobatics and of course, the clowns. The Boss Clown of the blue unit show appearing in Columbus is Columbus native, David Solove. Solove grew up in the Berwick area of the city and always knew that he was going to be a performer. He was a theater major in college.”I did a lot of children’s theater, then a friend told me about Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus’ Clown College and I became a clown,” Solove said. “I’ve made a pretty good living at it too.”Unfortunately the college closed in 1997 after 30 years. Solove has been with Ringling Bros. for eight years. “The average life span for a clown with any one circus is about three years,” said Solove. Solove’s duties as Boss Clown are not visible to the audience. Most of his responsibilities lie behind the scenes. The clowns remain a focal point throughout the show said Solove. One of his jobs is to make sure that all of the other clowns are in the right places. He also serves as a liaison between management and the other entertainers.”I construct lists and do inventory of clown supplies as well, sort of quality control,” he said. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus will run from today through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Schott. An hour before the show all ticket holders are welcome to come down to the arena for the “Three Ring Adventure,” an up close look at the circus and the acts involved.Tickets, which include the “Three Ring Adventure” at no additional cost, are priced at $18.75, $15.75 and $10.75 and are on sale at the Schott Box office and all TicketMaster locations, including Kroger grocery stores. A select number of ringside seats are available for $50. For more information call 1-800-Arena 01.
