This is Miranda July’s month.Or perhaps, more accurately, this is our month for Miranda July.July, a multi-media performance artist will be the last event in the Wexner Center’s Church of What’s Happening Now exhibit, performing today at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.July, who has a shopping list of artistic achievements to her name, including her own video-distribution network and spoken word albums for the K and Kill Rock Star record labels, will concentrate on her live, one-woman performance pieces in tonight’s show. She will perform excerpts from her previous piece, “Love Diamond,” as well as part of her new work-in-progress, “The Swan Tool.”With a home base is Portland, Ore., July has been in town for the past week editing “The Swan Tool” in the Wexner Center’s facilities. According to her, “work-in-progress” is not a term to be taken lightly.”I’m going to be doing a work-in-progress tour in October, which is the soonest that I feel a work-in-progress tour can be ready,” July said. “In a way, it’s still sort of really raw.”July said working at the Wexner has been a great experience, allowing her to escape from the hassles of home, and focus solely on her project, but the pressure that comes with performing has followed her to Columbus.Calling the thought of the performances “mildly hair-raising,” July said, “In a way, I feel that this is the sort of thing I feel I would do at home – in a community that I knew, and that knew my work, so it’s a really daring thing for me to do it for people who mostly don’t know my work – who haven’t seen me live at least.”She said that being at the Wexner helped a great deal. “I feel – because I’m working on it here – it feels really organic, and I can take that risk because I’m performing downstairs from where I edit.””The Swan Tool” is the story of both a girl who works as a technician in a large corporation, and a large, hairy non-human creature, “probably from underground.”July plays the girl. Her co-star is a large constructed creature that she designed for the piece and refers to affectionately on her Web site as “Butt Butt.””The Swan Tool” will make its official debut at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in January.July will also do excerpts from her previous performance piece, “Love Diamond,” which wrapped up its tour this past March in New York.In Saturday’s matinee performance, July will present videos from her grass-roots video distribution network for girls, Big Miss Moviola.Girls send in their short movies, and July compiles them, 10 at a time, onto “chain letter tapes.” She then sends them back out to the contributors, creating an instant small community of people who have seen each other’s work.July said that on Saturday, her entire focus will be on Big Miss Moviola, but said that she liked the aspect of having two different performances to concentrate on, both her live performance art and the video distribution.”It kind of places me perfectly betwixt the two, which is exactly where I am,” July said. All performances are free at the Wexner Center with gallery admission, so tonight’s performance is completely free. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
