My head hurts and Christina Aguilera is to blame. The Grammy award-winning blond pop moppet brought her first headlining tour to the Celeste Center at the Ohio State Fair on Monday. For those living under a rock, Aguilera has sold six million copies of her 1999 released self-titled debut album which features the omnipresent singles “Genie In a Bottle,” “What A Girl Wants,” “I Turn To You” and “Come On Over Baby.”For those who care about such things, the choice between Aguilera and Britney Spears is as serious as Backstreet Boys versus *NSYNC or uh, Blur versus Oasis. For Aguilera, this wasn’t just a tour but a chance to show the world that she’s more than just a video vixen, pop puppet or Britney-aby.There was no mistaking this crowd for Ozzfest fans. Primarily young and female, many dressed in midriff-baring Aguilera-like garb. (Moms, do you really think it’s appropriate to have your ten-year-old daughter dressed like that? Just a question.) XY chromosomes were in short, short supply. The concert kicked off with Aguilera’s first single “Genie In A Bottle.” Flanked by her six-member dance troupe of four guys and two girls, she got the crowd on its feet and the show to a high-energy start. This is where the pain started. There’s no sound quite like thousands upon thousands of high-pitched crazed voices screaming their approval for every little hip shake and vocal ad-lib. Now imagine that sound amplified by bouncing off concrete floors and a metal ceiling. Wow. There’s one thing that’s very obvious. Aguilera can really sing. It’s plain to see she’s from the Mariah Carey school of pop singing. Blend in some swooping ad-libs with big ole helpings of R&B stylings and voila! Baby diva! At times, it was almost like she was overcompensating and the feeling was a bit hollow. We get it. You can sing. But to her credit the mic was always live and there wasn’t a lip-synched moment. Whenever Aguilera addressed the crowd her voice had a husky quality as if she was out of breath. Girlfriend was working up there.Aguilera was supported by a solid band and two backup singers that worked up the majority of her album. She kept the show upbeat with only a handful of mid-tempo songs. She only dipped into ballad land a couple of times, notably with “I Turn To You,” which showed Aguilera at her most Mariah-like. Musically, the majority of the songs were reminiscent of ’80s R&B pop. Think Bobby Brown back when he had a prerogative. The show as a whole was very stripped down. The stage was a simple two-level set up, with the band and a video screen in the center. No fancy props or stagecraft and only three costume changes from Aguilera. So the focus was purely on what was happening on stage, which was solid. The band work was unremarkable and the dancing was respectable. Although there was a recreation of the dance breakdown from the “Come On Over” video and a dance interlude where her troupe showed their stuff, there was nothing that made jaws drop in amazement The most surprising thing was that Aguilera didn’t really dance that much. She actually spent more time singing and working the crowd. But there was plenty of the “Aguilera Hip Shake®.” Whap, whap, whap! There goes the hips!Overall, the show was suprisingly entertaining but there were some head-scratching moments. The first came during her cover of blues legend Etta James’ “At Last.” Before she sang the song she asked the crowd if they knew Etta James and they screamed in approval, as if to say “Yes Christina, we also love the blues and particularly Etta James.” Considering that most of the crowd was too young to remember Debbie Gibson or Tiffany, it’s doubtful they knew Etta James’ work. The second moment was during her cover of Free’s “All Right Now.” Just think about that for a second. Pop gal covering ’70s classic rock song. But she was game, shaking her hair like a rocker and a quick grind with the guitar player. It was also during this section, through Aguilera’s prompting, that the crowd unleashed another fierce wave of screams that sounded like a 747 landing. Screams so powerful that I had to hold on to a chair for support. Ouch. Finally the show ended with “What A Girl Wants” and the final “Huh?” moment. As Aguilera and her dancers twirled, gyrated and popped, the video screen showed various pop culture images along with a Communist Russian flag, Cuban flag and other odd political snaps. Apparently what a girl wants is socialism. After an hour performance, 11 songs, a DJ interlude, and a crowd so loud I went blind from the screams, I had the words of Aguilera echoing in my head. “If you wanna be with me, baby there’s a price to pay.”Well, I paid with my hearing and… it was a good show. I admit it. Take away my cool points.
