So what’s all the buzz about a new hair salon and art gallery on campus? With celebrity customers such as the comedian Carrot Top, Rikki Rockett, the drummer from legendary heavy-metal band Poison and both members of the rap group Insane Clown Posse hitting the new hot spot located at 12 Chittenden Ave., the Buzz-Barber Salon and Art Gallery proves to be a place worth talking about.Though it has the traditional red and white striped barber pole out front and old fashioned barber chairs inside, the Buzz is anything but a conventional place like barber shops of days old, where old men would go to get a quick hair cut and read the Sunday paper. The Buzz specializes in hip hairstyles done by Davey Doo, whose artistic haircuts and mohawks have been the topic of discussion on the Sally Jesse Raphael Show.Owner Dave Fenstermaker, professionally known as Davey Doo, is visibly proud of his unique hair salon and art gallery.”The Buzz is a place with a great atmosphere, good music and cool people where you can come and hangout and not feel like you have to talk about politics, religion or ex-wives or new wives,” Doo said.Hair cuts and colors are not the only things for sale at the Buzz. The salon is also an art gallery featuring the work of many local artists. Music and incense fill the air with their respective sweet sounds and smells, while paintings and sculptures decorate every crevice of the salon – creating a place full of artistic ambiance.”Here the walls are welcome to all local artists,” Doo said. “I am also an artist, and I know what it is like trying to find a place to expose your work.” The Buzz offers a wide variety of haircuts such as “the surfer,” “the Caesar” and of course, the buzz cut.The fashionable styles of the Buzz are not limited to men alone. Davey Doo, who jokingly says he has a “Ph.D. in hair,” also has plenty of styles available for women.”Everybody is welcome here,” he said. “My door is open to everyone, and that’s what makes us unique.”Since graduating from the Ohio State Barber College in 1985, Doo has been mastering the world of hair. He says his passion for hair runs in his blood. He comes from a family of barbers, and cutting hair is the only job he has ever had. After graduating from barber school, he moved to New York City where he learned the trade and earned his classic and appropriate nickname.Melissa Martel, the newest barber to join the salon, previously was employed at the Rockefeller Barbershop in Cleveland. According to Doo, in addition to having “mad barbering skills,” she is also a terrific breakdancer.Owning his own barber salon and art gallery have been Doo’s life dream. He said since the opening of the Buzz this past September, it has been nothing but successful and fun. He plans to keep the salon on Chittenden Avenue for a while and looks forward to inviting live DJs on Friday nights to spin music.
