Tomorrow, Indiana and Ohio State limp into their Big Ten season opener in Bloomington, Ind.
Indiana (0-2) is coming off a 28-26 loss to Utah while the Buckeyes (1-1) will be looking to score some points on offense.
“This is the Big Ten season and we look forward to playing Ohio State,” Indiana coach Cam Cameron said. “We’ve got some things to get corrected from the Utah game.”
All eyes will be on the quarterbacks.
Steve Bellisari will receive another chance to lead the Buckeyes, while Scott McMullen will be looming behind him.
Indiana has no such problem of quarterback incompetence.
Antwaan Randle El, one of the most explosive players in the Big Ten, will quarterback the Hoosiers.
Randle El has also starred as a wide receiver, return man and basketball player for the Hoosiers. OSU coach Jim Tressel said he will prepare for Randle El as an option quarterback.
“The pressure that Randle El brings will be unlike any pressure we’ve faced,” Tressel said. “You can talk about DeShaun Foster, Tab Perry or (Brian) Poli-Dixon but they don’t put anywhere near the pressure on the defense that Randle El does.”
Randle El has been the Big Ten version of Kordell Stewart: completing 15 of 24 passes for 164 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while rushing 25 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns. Not to mention catching four passes for 30 yards.
Bam Childress played the role of Randle El during OSU practice this week in preparation for the elusive Randle El.
Cameron has had his own problems to deal with: the Ohio State defense.
“They were able to take a pretty good UCLA offense and turned it into a game where they pulled the ball off seven times, they recovered four fumbles, they really created a lot of confusion in UCLA’s offense,” Cameron said. “We are going to have to do a good job of executing against Ohio State. This is an excellent, excellent Ohio State defense.”
Indiana’s leading rusher is running back Levron Williams who ripped Utah for 116 yards on 15 carries.
“It is not going to be easy to get off to a good start,” Cameron said. “The staff and I will have to come up with some creative ways to get (Williams) the ball so they aren’t keying in on some things that we have done in the past.”
If the OSU offense is to build confidence, this would be a good weekend to do it.
Cameron had this to say about his defense performance last Saturday which surrendered 447 total yards to Utah. “We have a Hoosiers Club that we give an award each week, where you have the right to earn into that club, based on performance. It is an 80 percent grade minimum and a winning performance. This is the first week that I can remember that no one (on defense) made it.
“We made far too many mental mistakes on Saturday to think that we are going to be a productive defense,” Cameron said. “The linebackers are the heart and soul of any defense. A lot of those mental mistakes were unforced…there was nothing earth-shattering on Utah’s part. They were mental mistakes that you’re not going to be able to survive on defense.”
Indiana’s leading tackler, weak-side linebacker Justin Smith, dinged his knee against Utah and will not be full-go against Ohio State.
Where to watch?
