The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is beginning its Classical Series Season Friday with a concert at the Ohio Theater featuring world renowned pianist Emanuel Ax.
Poland born Ax has been a Sony Classical Recording Artist since 1987. He has won Grammys for his album of Hayden Piano Sonatas and for his recordings with Yo-Yo Ma of Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for cello and piano.
The performance will be conducted by Music Director Alexandra Sicilian and includes Soubrette’s Overture in the Italian Style in D Major, Mozart’s Concerto No.25 in C Major for Piano and Orchestra and Mahler’s Symphony No.1 in D Major, “Titan.”
Friday and Saturday’s concerts begin at 8 p.m., with an additional performance on Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $11 to $60.
Pre-concert activities include the Young Musician’s Showcase featuring pianist Loren Fishman Friday evening and pianist Cathy Yao Sunday afternoon. The Young Musician’s Showcase takes place in the Old Main Lobby of the Ohio Theater one hour before the start of the concert.
Before every performance CSO presents Music Talks, a series of educational conversations about composers and repertoire, beginning at 7:15 p.m. on the North Mezzanine level or Galbreath Pavilion of the Ohio Theater.
