The University of Iowa mascot went bananas after being hit with an object by two unidentified Ohio State band members during an OSU football game.
Angela Anderson, former Herky the Hawk mascot, filed a personal injuries lawsuit against OSU.
She claims she was “struck violently in the back of the head by an inflatable or hard foam object” while dressed as the Hawkeye mascot during the Oct. 30, 1999 football game at OSU.
According to the claim, after a touchdown was made by OSU, an Ohio State band member was on the shoulders of another band member swinging an object that hit Anderson in the head causing “severe personal injuries, pain and suffering.”
Herky the Hawk attire consists of a 2.5 pound fiberglass hawk head and a yellow and black uniform with a capital “I” on the front.
According to an article in The Other Paper that quoted Anderson’s attorney, Richard Schulte, the object was a foam banana that broke several of her vertebra.
Schulte did not return calls made by The Lantern.
Anderson filed the lawsuit Oct. 26, in the Ohio Court of Claims, asking for a judgment of $25,000 for personal and emotional injury as well as incurring medical costs.
OSU spokeswoman Elizabeth Conlisk said the university does not comment on pending litigation.
According to the law, OSU must respond to the lawsuit by Nov. 26.
