Family, friends and faculty are mourning the death of a Fisher College of Business student.

Jason A. Gervais, a senior in finance, died on Saturday morning after he was caught in gunfire behind Dockside Dolls, 2210 E. Dublin-Granville Rd. The 21-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival at Riverside Hospital at 3:17 a.m.

Mandel Williams, 23, of 140 Eldon Ave., was also injured in the gun fight. Williams was taken to Grant Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

“All of our information indicates they were innocent bystanders,” said Sgt. Earl Smith, spokesman for the Columbus Division of Police. According to Smith, no arrests have been made and there are no suspects at this time.

“He was just a super student and a great individual,” said Deborah Ballam, a business law professor. “He was one of our top students.”

Ballam said Gervais was on schedule to graduate Summa Cum Laude in June and was an honors student.

“He wanted to go to law school, and he would have been just excellent,” she said.

Ballam said Gervais’ classmates are upset. He had been involved in the B.A. Honors Cohort Program, which allowed students to take classes together in a group.

Gervais had just started a concierge business with a friend.

“It’s all so shocking,” Ballam said. “It’s a horrible waste.”

Gervais, of Gahanna, graduated from Westerville North High School where he played drums in the marching band.

Police are asking those with information to contact the homicide squad at 645-4730.

Visitation will be at the Hill Funeral Home, 220 State St. in Westerville, today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the funeral will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Hill Funeral Home.
