Dennis Quaid’s new movie, “The Rookie,” is as American and good-natured as one could expect from Disney. This film, full of hope, dreams, and working to make your dreams come true, inspires the viewer to take their happiness into their own hands.
This Americana film, revolving around baseball and family, depicts a coach’s attempt to motivate his team to win by not giving up. In doing so, the coach finds himself with the tables turned, and facing a challenge of his own.
This film is based on actual events, and Quaid’s character, Jimmy Morris, is a caring, passionate father, who loves his wife, his children and baseball. Quaid delivers a heartfelt performance, but at times it is difficult to believe that his character is as flawless and virtuous as is depicted. It is a Disney film, and knowing that, one should expect the feel good movie that earned a G rating.
This film is perfect for the family, avoiding any adult situations, sex or violence. This movie is two hours of challenges, lessons learned and overcoming fear. It also addresses having priorities, putting Quaid’s character between his love for his family and his longtime dream of professional baseball.
Quaid finds support from his wife, played by Rachel Griffiths, who throughout the movie gives endlessly and unselfishly to ensure the happiness and fulfillment of her husband’s ambitions. Quaid’s sidekick throughout the movie is his son, Hunter, who looks upon his father like a child who has seen the ocean for the first time. With big eyes and unconditional love, Hunter laughs his way into the hearts of all.
This movie succeeds in its simplicity, and in providing audiences with honorable, affable characters that one finds themselves rooting for and believing in. It reminds people of what is important in life, family, dreams and commitment. The movie shows people that our heroes don’t have to exist on television or on movie screens, but can be found at home.
