The Lantern is looking for opinion columnists for spring quarter 2003.

Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19.

Applicants must be full-time students who are not in a leadership position for a prominent community/school organization such as USG.

If selected, columnists will be required to write approximately 10 columns (one column every week) about a variety of topics of their choosing.

All applicants must submit a sample column based on the following criteria:a. Column must not exceed 550 words.b. Column must include Name, Rank, Major, Phone Number, and E-mail address at the bottom of the submission.c. Column must be submitted before 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 19.d. Topic will be selected from one of two prompts that will be posted on www.thelantern.com

Based on the sample column submitted, selected applicants will be asked to come to the Lantern newsroom for a face-to-face interview with the Opinion Editor. In the event that a meeting cannot be arranged, the Opinion Editor will conduct a phone interview.

Prompts: 1.) For the past year, war has been mounting between the United States and Iraq. Write a column in support of or in opposition to a possible war. Include your stance on Bush’s personal views and how they do/do not affect the decision, the importance of attacking Iraq as opposed to other terrorist threats, economic effects to the United States, support from the U.N. or a combination of these topics. 2.) Campus Partners has worked on the Gateway Project — a project designed to improve the area south of campus — for several years. Write a column stating your position on the Gateway Project and Campus Partners. Include your opinion on the progress or lack of progress you feel has been made on the project, how beneficial you believe the project is to the area south of campus, a comparison of a new, upper-economic class district to the area’s previous businesses or a combination of these topics.
