In Thursday’s edition of The Lantern, the newspaper ran a large advertisement for campustruth.org. The implications of this ad — namely inciting hatred and deepening division — greatly disturbed me.
I want to point out the discrepancies of power, money, and access, which allow some voices to be heard and others to be silenced. I do not support censorship, but I do support multiple readings and a plurality of truths based on context and perspective.
I certainly hope that campustruth.org and The Lantern readers do not think that the ad and the organization behind it are unbiased.
I encourage readers to seek more sources of information, like Amnesty International (web.amnesty.org/web/web.nsf/pages/IOT_Conscientious_Objectors), Human Rights Watch (www.hrw.org) and Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (www.unhchr.ch), where they can read multiple accounts from a variety of perspectives.
