At least one of the construction projects on campus will soon be completed.
Page Hall, on the southeast corner of the Oval, has been under reconstruction since March 2003. The roof and windows have been installed, and the building is expected to be completely enclosed by March 1, said Ruth Miller, senior project manger for the planning and development facilities at Ohio State.
The interior was gutted and only three walls and some pillars were left of the old building.
After the building is enclosed, work will continue on the interior. The entire project is expected to be completed by October, Miller said.
The new Page Hall will consist of a basement and four floors. The ground floor will be occupied by classrooms and a public computing site. The three upper levels will be divided between the John Glenn Institute and the School of Public Policy and Management.
The project budget is $16 million – $11 million of that is state funded, and the other $5 million will come from private donations. The John Glenn Institute is raising that money.
Page Hall opened in 1903, serving first as the home of the Moritz College of Law and then as part of the Fisher College of Business, according to the John Glenn Institute Web site.
Because of the building’s age and deteriorating condition, it became apparent a renovation was necessary, Miller said.
There were a few reasons for keeping some of the old Page Hall intact. One was keeping costs down. In addition, the institute liked the style of the building.
“The John Glenn Institute chose it because it reminded them of the buildings in Washington,” Miller said.
The John Glenn Institute offers internships in Washington for students and assists in the training of public officials. It has offices in both Stillman Hall and Fisher Hall. Deborah Merritt, director of the John Glenn Institute, said moving to Page Hall will give them more room and allow them to better serve students and visiting policymakers.
Merritt said she hopes to move the institute into Page Hall by December.
“We hope to celebrate the new year in the building,” Merritt said.
Miller said the main goal behind the project is to reconnect the building to the Oval.
“We want Page Hall to serve as a gateway from High Street into the university and the Oval,” Miller said.
