The pop-punk rockers Yellowcard came to Columbus Saturday to bring the Virgin College Mega Tour to an end. A crowd of about 3,000 packed into the lower bowl of the Schottenstein Center for the show.
The band is touring for its latest album release, “Lights and Sounds.” The album is a hard-hitting melodic frenzy, which is exactly how Yellowcard plays live.
Mackin brought high energy to the stage, getting the crowd into the show. During “October Nights,” amid rolling guitar riffs and anxious violin playing, Mackin found the time to do a back flip off one of the front stage sound monitors onto the stage. He then organized a large circle mosh pit. Mackin’s energy fed the crowd and it recycled that energy into moshing, screams and spurts of outlandish dancing.
Next, Key took a moment to talk to the crowd and let everyone know Ohio State was the first school to provide them with beer during the tour. The show seemed to come to a close, until the band came back for an encore of “Ocean Avenue,” which in turn culminated the evening with sweaty pop-punks jumping up and down to the angst-filled sounds of Yellowcard.
As for now, the band is taking a month off of touring for the album in order for Key to have a cyst removed from his vocal cords. The band has high hopes and is looking to get back on the road in June and tour through August.
