An Evening with Rigoberta Menchu
The recipient of the 1992 Nobel Peace Prize, Rigoberta Menchu will address Ohio State students today, at 7 p.m. Currently a candidate for the Guatemalan presidency, Menhcu will share her life story, as it sheds light on the experiences of millions of impoverished Guatemalans. This event, brought to campus courtesy of the Ohio Union Activities Board and Alpha Psi Lambda, is scheduled for Mershon Auditorium. For more information about this event visit ouab.osu.edu.
“Pan’s Labyrinth” showing
As part of its alternative film series, the Ohio Union Activities Board is presenting a free showing of “Pan’s Labyrinth.” The film, which took home three Academy Awards for best cinematography, best art direction and best makeup, plays today, at 6 p.m. in room 180 of Hagerty Hall. Free beverages and snacks will be provided for those who come to watch main character Ofelia escape into her own magical world. The movie is set in Spain after the civil war. Wilco and Andrew Bird concert
Promoting its new album “Sky Blue Sky,” Wilco heads to the Wexner Center Tuesday, at 8 p.m. Lead singer Jeff Tweedy is said to have pumped the album full of pop melodies and less-abstract lyrics. The band, which got together outside of Chicago in the mid-90s, added four new members in 2004 after losing some original members. Andrew Bird is sure to add to the show with his opening performance. OSU Cybersecurity Day
In correlation with cyber security month, Ohio State has organized lectures about standards, privacy and ID theft issues. Guest speaker Sol Bermann, Ohio’s privacy officer, along with Matthew Hellman, a specialist from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, will hold an afternoon lecture. The all-day event runs from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Buckeye Comedy Club
Take a break from studying and watch up-and-coming comics Wednesday, at 8 p.m. in room 100 of Independence Hall. This comedy lineup was created exclusively for Ohio State. Admission for this event is free. For additional information visit ouab.osu.edu.
Jason Lindner Trio performance
Jazz pianist Jason Lindner recently assembled a trio with bass player Omer Avital and percussion master Yayo Serka. Lindner, who worked at the BBC as a journalist, has released an album called “Ab Aeterno.” The cabaret-style music makes audiences fall in love with that old New York sound again. The trio is set to take the stage Friday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. Student tickets for the performance can be purchased at the Wexner Center box office for $13. For additional information visit wexarts.org.
“Santa” showing
Come watch the first well-received Mexican film with sound. The movie “Santa,” starring actress Lupita Tovar, centers around the story of a young girl whose soldier lover leaves her. The showing will include English subtitles. “Santa” starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday, at the Wexner Center. Student tickets can be purchased for $13 at the Wexner Center box office.
