The Ohio State field hockey team’s season came to an end with a loss to North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament Saturday.
North Carolina jumped on the Buckeyes early and amassed a 3-0 first-half lead, which proved to be insurmountable.
“In the second half, we started putting things together,” coach Anne Wilkinson said.
It was in the second half that junior Aisling McKeon scored for the Buckeyes, making the score 4-1, but the Buckeyes were unable to produce any more offense.
The goal by McKeon was a rare feat, as the Buckeyes are only one of six teams all season to score on the stout Tar Heel defense.
“Our seniors had this as a goal, and we have worked very hard to play in the NCAA tournament,” Wilkinson said. “I am so proud of them.”
Ohio State finishes its season with a record of 13-7 and is now 1-5 all-time in the NCAA tournament.
The Tar Heels improve to 17-2 with the victory and move onto the second round. North Carolina’s second round opponent will be the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, who knocked off Indiana in its first round matchup.
