It might be called “V-Day” but this event is not for Valentine’s Day.

“V-Day is an international organization that aims to stop violence against women and girls,” said Micaela Deming, a graduate of Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law who is involved with the local campus campaign.

The Surly Girl Saloon is hosting a V-Day Fundraiser Friday to raise money for the organization.

Ninety percent of the proceeds from the event will go to the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio, with the remaining 10 percent going to help the women of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This is the third year the fundraiser has been hosted by the Surly Girl, because of their “women friendly” atmosphere, Deming said.

For each item ordered off the special fundraiser menu, V-Day receives $1.

Raffle tickets sold at five for $5 will give customers the chance to donate money and win gift card prizes.

“We hope to raise at least $1,000 by raffling off thousands of dollars worth of gift baskets, each one worth over $100,” Deming said.

V-Day at OSU is best-known for the annual production of “The Vagina Monologues” by Eve Ensler. The play is used to celebrate women’s sexuality and strength, according the organization’s Web site.

Myriam Merlet, an important V-Day activist, was recently killed in the earthquake in Haiti.

According the to the Web site, Merlet brought “The Vagina Monologues” to Haiti in 2001 to raise awareness about violence towards women.

The local campaign plans to do the same.

“This fundraiser provides us with an opportunity to make more people aware of the violence against women and V-Day’s efforts locally and internationally,” Deming said.

The fundraiser will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at 1126 North High St.
