A controversial dating Web site has created quite the buzz for its recent business decision. Beautifulpeople.com, an online dating site that notoriously rejects anyone its members perceive as unattractive, has expelled 5,000 members in the new year for packing on the pounds during the holidays.
“Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model,” said Robert Hintze, founder of beautifulpeople.com, in an interview with CNN.
Their business model? To maintain “the sexiest Web site in the world today” by denying entry to four out of five hopefuls and allowing members to vote for or against applicants, thus sparing them the inconvenience of filtering through ugly people when trying to land a date. However, they are kind enough to let those too ugly to sign up browse the site as a guest. How thoughtful.
While the shamelessly superficial nature of founders and members might be disturbing to the average human being, I have to give these “beauties” some credit. They know what they want and they aren’t afraid to ask for it. Those narcissists who are fortunate enough to gain entry to the site and create a profile, which I’m sure would be highly entertaining to peruse, are fully aware of the stipulations to the agreement: get fat, get ugly, get gone.
That being said, I cannot feel sorry for the recent rejects of beautifulpeople.com. They knew what they were signing up for and they knew what would happen if their rating of attractiveness fell. If they were so invested in Hintze’s haven for hotties, they should have put down the Twinkie.
Honestly, I think these people did themselves a favor by putting on some weight. Maybe now they’ll have an opportunity to date someone less obsessed with their own appearance, and even begin to see inner beauty.
Alright, maybe that’s a stretch.
I do find it hard to comprehend the mentality of someone so self-absorbed that his or her only goal is to find someone just as shallow. I can only imagine the conversations these people share.
Regardless, I’m happy for the men and women who represent beautifulpeople.com. They truly deserve each other.
