A new student organization has found an interesting way to leave a mark on the new Ohio Union: by television.
Ohio Union Television will create and produce original content for the televisions around the Ohio Union.
“The new Ohio Union has so much to offer,” said Allie Feinstein, president of Ohio Union Television. “I felt that it was the obvious place to organize a student forum for creative expression through video.”
Ohio Union Television is the vision of Feinstein and J. Randall Hicks, the Ohio Union’s multimedia coordinator.
“We saw the need to create an organization that would offer students with a passion in video, media and entertainment hands-on-experience in a structured, non-academic format, while aligning ourselves with the values of new Ohio Union,” Feinstein said.
The organization will create two- to three-minute broadcasts daily to be played on the audio-enabled screens in the Ohio Union.
The organization’s creation, on Feb. 3, has sparked interest in Ohio State students.
“Since we’ve become an official organization we’ve had about 40 students either attend an info session or get in touch with us and the interest is growing daily,” said Drew Love, vice president of Ohio Union Television.
The main priority of Ohio Union Television will be to provide students, faculty and staff with daily updates about events and information relating to the Ohio Union. Feinstein said that Ohio Union Television also plans to offer video services for student organizations that send in requests.
Ashley Sinram, a third-year in international studies and a member of Ohio Union Television, said members will take on all roles and will gain valuable experience.
Ohio Union Television is meant to be creative and entertaining and provides a new perspective of “showing versus telling,” Sinram said.
Courtney Chow, a second-year in strategic communication and member of Ohio Union Television, said that she joined to gain experience in filming and producing.
“I have had on-screen experience when I was little. I thought this would open up new opportunities,” Chow said.
Ohio Union Television members will have the opportunity to gain experience in different aspects of video production including, writing, producing, directing, editing and on-camera work. Students will also learn how to compose a film reel and have the opportunity to have headshots taken.
Chow said with all the opportunities and experience Ohio Union Television can provide, it is almost better than an internship.
Love said that students interested in Ohio Union Television should fill out a simple application that will provide more information about the applicants’ interests and experience with video production.
