When at the movie theater, when with your friends and when in the right mindset, you might enjoy the movie “When in Rome”: a highly predictable, yet undeniably entertaining romantic comedy.
Kristen Bell plays a “Type A” woman named Beth in a relationship with her career, having given up on love. After attending her little sister’s spur-of-the-moment wedding in Rome, she takes out her frustration on the fountain of love. Beth’s every attempt to get her romantic life back on track is thwarted by multiple unwanted suitors who have all become inexplicably spellbound by her.
Bell is vivacious and her energy, along with Josh Duhamel’s charm as the handsome guy in love, causes you to almost forget the fact that every other character in the movie is utterly one-dimensional. There is the cynical mother, the bumbling best friend, the ruthless boss and of course the suitors themselves, each on a one-track trip to obtain Beth’s love.
Those suitors do happen to be played by some easily recognizable actors who are known for their quirky theatrics. Among them, Will Arnett (“Arrested Development”) and Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite”) have personalities that shine through the barriers of the characters they play.
“When in Rome” is filled with many situations that are so unrealistic that you abandon thinking logically and just enjoy the wackiness that is being fed to you. If you are looking for a feel-good movie that is not in any way taxing on the brain, this is the film for you.
