The Ohio State Board of Trustees amended the procedure for setting and reviewing total compensation to university executives during the Talent and Compensation Committee meeting Thursday.

Susan Basso, vice president of talent, culture and human resources, introduced the amendments to the procedure documents that added jurisdiction for interim executives and a history section to track revisions.

“Per the talent and comp committee’s request, we have updated the ‘Procedure for Setting and Reviewing Compensation for University Executives’ document to include authority over interim appointments to award purview executive positions,” Basso said.

The compensation for university executives includes all physician and non-physician university employees that earn more than $270,000 annually, meaning any cash compensation that might be awarded to, earned by or paid to an employee during a one-year period, according to  Board documents.

The procedure outlines the scope of authority for setting and reviewing total compensation opportunities for the president and certain other executives, such as the provost and chief executive officer of the Wexner Medical Center.

The president, provost, CEO of the medical center, university board purview executives and medical center board purview executives all have their compensation approved by the Board. Total compensation within the Department of Athletics for football and basketball agreements go directly to the president for approval, according to Board documents.

This is the fourth revision of the compensation setting and review since its adoption in August 2015, with the most recent revision in January 2017. The full Board will vote to approve the amendments to the procedure on Friday.

The Talent and Compensation Committee also gave an update on Ohio State’s strategic plan, also known as Time and Change. The committee noted key executive recruits, such as Johanna Burton to director of Wexner Center for the Arts, Morley Stone to senior vice president of research and Timothy Rehner to dean and director of the Lima Regional Campus.
