High Street will become a winter wonderland this Saturday as the Short North Arts District comes alive with festive cheer, celebrating one of Columbus’ biggest holiday events.

Holiday Hop, a multi-decade hallmark Columbus celebration will kick off the jolly season with holiday tastes, sights and sounds as it returns to the Short North Arts District — which occupies the section on High Street between Goodale Street and 7th Avenue — for its 30th anniversary this Saturday from noon to 8 p.m.

Betsy Pandora, executive director of the Short North Alliance, said the day will be jam-packed with activities intended for locals to get into the holiday spirit.

“Attendees can look forward to a pedestrian-friendly High Street transformed into a festive wonderland,” Pandora said. “Highlights include the High Street Holiday Market, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, an ice skating rink, free gift wrapping and live music.”

Pandora said the idea for Holiday Hop came about 30 years ago, building on the long-standing tradition of Gallery Hop.

“It started as a way to spotlight local artists, businesses and performers while creating a festive atmosphere for the holiday season,” Pandora said. “Over time, it has grown into a marquee event that blends holiday cheer with the vibrant energy of the Short North, drawing visitors from all over Columbus and beyond.”

According to Pandora, this year’s celebration marks just the second time High Street has been closed down to vehicular traffic, allowing for not only musical performances, but the addition of an expansive holiday market.

“These vendors complement and expand the shopping opportunities offered by the district’s more than 300 brick-and-mortar businesses, making the Holiday Hop a truly unique and comprehensive holiday destination,” Pandora said.

Kate Stevens, owner of Red Giraffe Designs and one of the event’s returning vendors, said her past participation has contributed to her business success.

“Last year the Holiday Hop brought us our No. 1 day of sales ever in the Short North since opening up here in 2015,” Stevens said, “It was an incredible day.”

Aside from the promotional aspect, Stevens said she enjoyed the many festivities the Holiday Hop offered.

“My favorite is the Elf Trail where participating businesses hide an elf somewhere around their store and kids have to find them,” Stevens said. “Once they find the elf, they get a sticker for their trail card. Once the card is full, they get a special treat. The kids loved this last year, including my son.”

Pandora said the “holiday magic” at the event is her favorite part and the main reason Columbus residents should attend.

“There’s a special magic in watching families, friends and neighbors enjoy the holiday spirit, support local businesses and celebrate the creative energy of the Short North,” Pandora said. “It’s a moment where the heart of the district truly shines.”

Admission is free and open to the public with parking validations and Lyft discounts for attendees. For more information and potential updates on Holiday Hop, visit the event’s website.
