As of Monday, Ohio State’s chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity has been placed on interim suspension due to hazing allegations, university spokesperson Dave Isaacs said in an email.
An email obtained by The Lantern — sent Monday from the Interfraternity Council to Interfraternity Council chapter presidents and other leaders — stated the potential violations include “hazing” and “student conduct abuse.” Isaacs said he cannot provide further information regarding the potential violations while the investigation is ongoing.
“As required by Collin’s Law, Ohio’s anti-hazing law, the information has been shared with law enforcement,” Issacs said.
ATO’s student activities webpage on the Office of Student Life website also lists its status as “inactive.”
“Their registration as a recognized student organization has been temporarily discontinued, pending a full investigation now underway by Student Conduct,” Isaacs said
During the interim suspension’s duration, the chapter cannot participate in nor host any “recognized student organization activities,” Issacs said.
Issacs said these events include, but are not limited to, “meetings,” “intramural sporting events” and “organizational social events.” The chapter will also be required to halt all new member activities.
This interim suspension follows ATO’s “disciplinary probation,” which began Jan. 30 and will last until May 4, 2025, as a result of hazing, according to the Office of Student Life’s Sorority and Fraternity Life Organization Conduct History website.
ATO did not reply to The Lantern’s requests for comment by the time of publication.
This is a breaking news story that will be updated as The Lantern obtains more information.
