When the flames of the barbecue go down and the keg is tapped this Memorial Day Weekend, take a trip to Ruby Tuesday’s on Summit Street for “Quarkstock,” a two-night music festival filled with alternative live music. “Quarkstock” is the brainchild of Quarkspace, a local space rock band that will be performing on Saturday. The band hopes the concert will expand the independent music scene in Columbus and help promote their independent music label, Eternity’s Jest Records. They also felt it was about time Columbus had their own alternative music festival.”It’s a great place to see some non-corporate alternative music,” said Dave Wexler, guitarist for Quarkspace. “It would be great if people came out to help support it and to enjoy a cool weekend of music and lights.”Wexler describes the concept of space rock as psychedelic 1970s sounds mixed with more modern electronic instruments such as synthesizers.”It’s the past mixed with the cutting-edge technology of the present,” Wexler said.Tombstone Valentine, a self-proclaimed space rock-modern psychedelia band, is also set to perform Saturday night. Other bands on the Saturday night roster include Architectural Metaphor, a synthesizer-heavy group, and Aether Project, which blends progressive, psychedelic, fusion and free-form music. Four bands will perform on Sunday to help close the weekend festival. French TV will open up the night with their progressive rock performance. Escapade from New York will continue to entertain the crowd, and Born to Go and Alien Planetscapes will end the night and the festival.”It’s all rock ‘n’ roll,” said Wexler. “It’s different parts of the musical spectrum meeting off the mainstream. Each band represents the different aspects of that spectrum.”Along with the eight bands set to play in the festival, Solarfire Light Show will provide an eyeful of lighting entertainment for viewers. The group will show off their talents with black lights, strobe lights and scenes from outer space to complement the space rock theme.Doors will open at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets will be available at the door of Ruby Tuesday’s located at 1978 Summit St. Admission prices will be $20 for a two-day pass and $12 for a single night admission.
