For many touring musicians, life on the road is a full-time job. This is not the case for a local band, Of A Revolution, or OAR. “We are all full-time students at OSU, so we all have to balance school and OAR. Right now we are playing three, maybe four nights a week,” said Marc Roberge, lead vocalist for the band. The band’s success has been a dream come true for these young musicians. This dream started a long time ago, when Roberge was in the eighth grade. That is when he and two other band members, Chris Culos and Richard On, began playing in local bars together. They have been building an audience ever since. “In the beginning, we’d make copies of tapes and just give them away. We were not trying to make anything, we were just trying to get our music out there,” Roberge said. The band still believes in this today. They allow and support taping of their live shows and trading of their music over the Internet. “That is just another way to share our music with people. I think it is great that the music of so many bands is accessible over the Internet. For us, it has really supported and strengthened our fan base considerably,” said Benj Gershman, bass player for OAR. Gershman also thinks their unique music sound has helped build and maintain an audience. “I don’t know if there is a specific genre we fit into. I kind of feel like we are a blend of music’s purest elements, you know, all those good vibes you love listening to. We incorporate so many styles into our sound, I think it really brings people together from different backgrounds,” Gershman said. “If I had to categorize our sound, I’d say it has an island vibe, roots rock feeling, but it is really a blend of almost every kind of music you have ever heard,” Roberge said.”All of OAR’s music is completely original. Marc writes the lyrics and we all collaborate on the music itself,” Gershman said. “Every show is original as well. The mood of the audience really determines what kind of show it will be,” Roberge said. “The band has been selling out shows across the region,” said manager Dave Roberge. “In the next month alone, they will be playing in Chicago, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. The band is being booked as a national act across the region right now and have sold out shows at places that all house over 1,500 people.”Dave Roberge is Marc’s older brother and has been helping the band out for years. “Dave handles the operation side of the band: booking, distribution, marketing and promotions. We let him worry about the more technical things because we have to focus on school. During the week, my mind is on school, you know, reality,” Marc said. “This could become a full-time job for both Roberge brothers, along with the rest of the band. We will probably go fulltime after this year,” he said.Gershman definitely thinks the band could make it big. “There is nothing in my life that makes me happier than performing in the next long while, I am going to be pushing for it with everything I have,” he said.
