Ohio State is back on top.
No. 14 Ohio State (21-5, 12-1 Big Ten) upset No. 3 Purdue (23-3, 12-1 Big Ten) on the road with a last second tip-in layup from redshirt junior Keita Bates-Diop to hand Ohio State the 64-63 win and give them the lead in the Big Ten.
With 2.8 seconds remaining in the game, redshirt junior forward Keita Bates-Diop caught a rebound off a missed shot from senior forward Jae’Sean Tate to give the Buckeyes a late 64-63 lead.
Ohio State junior guard C.J. Jackson launched a floater with 1:57 left to bring the game to 60-59. Just 28 seconds later, forward Andre Wesson knocked down a 3 to give Ohio State the 62-60 lead. Forward Vincent Edwards drew a foul on a made shot though to give the Boilermakers the 63-62 lead.
Ohio State kept it close early in the second half, but Purdue guard Carsen Edwards took over the game, scoring all 17 points during the Boilermakers’ 17-5 run to sprint out to a 53-39 lead with 10:15 left in the game. After Edwards let up, Ohio State went on a 9-0 run of its own to bring the game back to single digits.
The Boilermakers went on a 17-7 run to push its lead over the Buckeyes to 31-22 with 7:14 left in the first half. But the Buckeyes brought the score to within two with just two seconds left in the first half to head into the second half down just 31-29.
Ohio State shot 42 percent from the field to 43 percent from the Boilermakers, and saw its bench outscore Purdue’s bench 18-0.
Purdue received a bulk of its production just from two players: Carsen and center Isaac Haas. Carsen finished the game with 28 points and six rebounds, while Haas had 18 points and three rebounds. The rest of the team combined to score 17 points.
There was no player for Ohio State who was able to produce much for the Buckeyes, but it received 18 points and 11 rebounds from Bates-Diop. Freshman guard Musa Jallow also had a career night, registering a career-high 10 points while making 3-of-4 shots from 3-point range.
