The Ohio State baseball team  (23-18, 6-6 Big Ten) moved to .500 in the Big Ten after taking two of three against Maryland (19-21, 6-6 Big Ten).

Game 1

The Maryland bats exploded to take the first game on Saturday.

Ohio State was outscored 14-8 in the first game of the doubleheader. Maryland recorded 20 hits and got after Ohio State freshman pitcher Garrett Burhenn.

Burhenn was handed his second loss of the season after his worst outing of the year, going a season-low five innings and allowing nine runs on 14 hits.

Maryland sophomore center fielder Randy Bednar would tally four hits and three RBI in the win.

Ohio State freshman shortstop Zach Dezenzo was able to launch two home runs, his seventh and eighth of the season, for three RBI, despite the loss.

Game 2

Heroics turned the tide for the Buckeyes in the second game of the doubleheader Saturday.  

Ohio State rallied to defeat Maryland 11-10 in 11 innings thanks to stellar play from junior pitcher Andrew Magno and redshirt sophomore designated hitter Brent Todys.

After the starting pitching faltered for the second-straight game, Magno was able to catch fire for the Buckeyes. The closer finished the last four innings for the Buckeyes, striking out a career-high 11 batters, the most by an Ohio State relief pitcher since 2003.

Todys was able to lift two home runs in the game, including the game winner in the top of the 11th. Todys would finish with four hits and four RBI on the day.

The Buckeyes were able to overcome a 7-2 deficit to win the game. The game was extended to extra innings after a two-out RBI by Todys in the ninth inning tied the game.

Game 3

Sophomore pitcher Griffan Smith shined to carry Buckeyes to the series win.

Smith produced a complete-game gem to take a second-straight game against Maryland. Ohio State outdueled Maryland 5-1 on Sunday.

Smith was able to strike out a career-high 10 batters and allow only four hits in his fourth win of the season. This was Smith’s first win since March 3 against Bethune Cookman.

Smith received help from the offensive performance of fifth-year senior center fielder Ridge Winand, who was able to tally four RBI on two home runs.

Junior right fielder Dominic Canzone was able to extend his on-base streak to 37 games, tying then-sophomore outfielder Troy Montgomery’s streak set back in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Ohio State will return home to begin a three-game series against Iowa at 6:35 p.m. Friday.
