The Ohio State field hockey team was knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament after losing 4-1 against Iowa Thursday afternoon.
No. 7 Iowa (14-4, 7-1 Big Ten) took a commanding lead early, scoring in the 11th, 15th and 20th minute. Both teams had four penalty corners, but Iowa had 15 shots to No. 22 Ohio State’s (9-9, 3-5) five. Five of the Hawkeyes’ shots fell on target compared to two for the Buckeyes.
Freshman midfielder Lokke Stribos led the way for the Hawkeyes, racking up four shots and two goals. Iowa also got a goal from senior midfielder Katie Birch and freshman midfielder Esme Gibson. Birch was one of three players unanimously voted to the All-Big Ten first team on Wednesday.
Ohio State Freshman midfielder Mackenzie Allessie scored unassisted for the Buckeyes, doing so in the 56th minute. The goal was the 16th of the year for Allessie, who was also voted to the All-Big Ten first team.
The game was played at the FH Complex at Penn State, which is hosting the tournament. The Buckeyes and Hawkeyes faced off earlier in this season in Iowa City, where Iowa won 2-1.
Iowa will play No. 14 Northwestern Friday at 6:30 p.m. The winner of the Big Ten Tournament automatically qualifies for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
The NCAA Tournament takes 18 teams. Ohio State is not likely to qualify for the tournament based on its No. 22 ranking, but the possibility is not yet ruled out.
